CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments

Why do I care? Many years ago my life has been transformed forever by an opportunity to be an exchange student for a year in a little logging community in Weippe, Idaho. It was the first high school student exchange program between the USA and Russia. Its goal was simple and honorable to build the bridge between two countries by connecting and bringing people together. It was the most incredible year of my life: year of learning not as a visitor but as a local, year of being out of comfort zone and, therefore, expanding my human dimensions and horizons while learning how to not only communicate but truly connect with people of different language, culture, background, race, and ethnicity. First, all I could see were vast differences and only later I started to see and appreciate the similarities. A country of strangers became a country of friends. That year provoked the deepest sense of curiosity about the world and its citizens. That's why today I wholeheartedly support and believe in the mission of SCN and the essential role it plays in building and shaping Nashville community. We connect people of Nashville to people around the world, we build relationships, and we promote cultural awareness and understanding. And while technology enables connectivity, it doesn't build true and authentic friendships; it doesn't create life long memories and life changing moments. As long as we as global citizens come together in real life and real time whether through education, music, sport, business or art the prospects for world peace will be strong. Beneath our diversity, the people of the world have similar goals of human dignity, freedom, and a chance to prosper. George Santayana, an American traveler and philosopher, once said, `A man's feet must be planted in his country, but his eyes should survey the world. That's why I choose to be a citizen diplomat and give to SCN. Join SCN, give to SCN today to help Nashville become a true global city of the present and the future.
