Background

In Summer 2013, a group of friends helped a young homeless couple find a home and filled it with furnishings. One of the friends, Cheryl, a former social worker who was dying of cancer and on a morphine pump at home, made calls to obtain donated furniture and other household goods and organized the list of items for the men to pick up and deliver. In February 2014, following Cheryl's death, Michael Gray, who had participated in the original effort, suggested that these efforts should be expanded because the needs are so great. The organization, named originally to honor Cheryl's spirit of inconvenient service, began picking up donations and delivering furniture and other basic household items to individuals transitioning from homelessness.

We work with over 20 Nashville agencies who identify people they have recently helped to settle in a home and then refer them for assistance with furnishings. During strategic planning in 2021, the nonprofit organization was renamed House2Home Nashville to describe more clearly the work that we do.

Our VISION is to be a 'go to' resource for furnishings for people in the Nashville area who are transitioning out of homelessness..

A New Name...Same Mission.

Impact

To date, we have helped over 900 formerly homeless families and have received donations of household goods from over 1,000 donors. Everyone who works with House2Home Nashville is a volunteer. No one is paid.

On average each week, we pick up donations of gently used furniture and other household items from 3 households and deliver furnishings to 2 formerly homeless families. Historically, House2Home Nashville (formerly Cheryl's List) has been able to respond to approximately 1/3 of the referrals received from Nashville's social service agencies to provide furniture and other basic households items to people transitioning from homelessness.

The NEW GOAL of House2Home Nashville, set in 2021, is to increase assistance from 125 to 250 households in a 12-month period.

Needs

Our 2021 NEW GOAL of 250 is DOUBLE what we have typically been able to do...This means our needs will DOUBLE also.

The significant needs include:

Volunteers to work in the warehouse to help sort donations of household items, to pack boxes to be delivered, and to organize for pickups and deliveries. (3-4 hours per week or per month are appreciated.)
Volunteers to drive the truck and/or help deliver furniture and other items to recipients or to pick up donations. (No used mattresses or bed pillows are accepted to assure there are no health risks to recipients.)
Volunteers to assist with fundraising activities.
Donors to give funds to be used to purchase new bedding.
Donors to give funds to be used for warehouse rent and trucks.

CEO Statement

In researching agencies in the Nashville area who provide furniture to individuals transitioning from homelessness, we found this service to be a great need. All donations go directly to purchasing items for basic household needs. Volunteers are unpaid and contribute significant time and financial resources to the organization. We believe others will embrace the mission and vision of House2Home Nashville to help increase the number of families who receive items to turn empty rooms into homes..

Board Chair Statement

Our service to our recipients has been a blessing to our volunteers as much as to our recipients. The biggest challenge we foresee is finding volunteers to help with the increasing workload in order to reach our goal of helping 250 formerly homeless families. People who know the services we offer have been very supportive; however, we need greater visibility to increase our base of support. Our 2021 strategic plan is designed to address the increase need for visibility and resources to meet our bold goal to double the number of households that we serve in a 12-month period.
