Mission

Lighthouse Christian School exists to glorify God by offering a Christ-centered, quality education that assists parents in training their children to be leaders and disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Background

Lighthouse Christian School was founded in 1979 as a result of a growing conviction and concern among the members of Lighthouse Baptist Church to provide a Christ-centered education for the children in the Antioch community. The mission of the school is 'to glorify God by offering a Christ-centered, quality education that assists parents in training their children to be disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ'. Lighthouse provides students with a quality, well rounded education from pre-school through the 12th grade, preparing them for the challenges that await in the years ahead (spiritually, socially and academically). For over 32 years LCS has been a servant and community partner with the nashville/Antioch areas and demonstrated this in their response to the May 2010 floods. While 8 of our 13 structures were either damaged or destroyed, the school and parent church provided for the needs of over 200 families in the immediate flooded areas and continued doing so over the many months of recovery. In September 2010 we were blessed when Extreme Makeover Home Edition and our community provided us with a new pre-school building to replace the facility we lost in the flood. Since this structure only provided space for 2/3 of the pre-school children, we recently completed construction of an additional building for the remaining children, leaving the school with a debt of $680,000. Today all of our students are together on the same campus, but the needs of our community are still great. We have exhausted all classroom space and our waiting list for the pre-school is growing daily. We want to continue to offer a private, Christian education that is affordable to any parent in the Nashville area that desires this specialized education for their child.

Impact

With the continued support of our Nashville community, we were able to complete Phase II of our pre-school recovery with additional classroom space for our 2 and 3 year-olds, which brought all of our pre-school children back under one roof for the first time since the flood. Our goals for this year are to strengthen our presence in the Antioch community and strive toward even greater impact on the diverse population in this area of Nashville. We provide an affordable Christian education to any parent who desires this type of education for their child. Lighthouse Christian School has become a HUB in this area, sharing its' facilities and athletic fields through partnering with such organizations as the TN Special Olympics, the Synergy Youth Soccer League, the Nashville Sports League, as well as other community organizations that assist families such as the Second Harvest Food Bank, the SE Nashville Flood Recovery and the American Heart Association to name a few. The goals established by our Board and school Administration are: A. To raise an Annual Fund of $100,000 to fund financial aid given to needy students in our community and to improve faculty salaries. B. Establish a Capital campaign to raise $3.6 million in order to: 1. retire the $680,000 debt incurred by the Phase II Pre-School replacement construction as a result of the May 2010 floods. 2. Construct a new 14,000 Sq.Ft. Theater/Fine Arts/ Middle School building adding much needed classroom space. 3. Renovate the athletic fields to enhance their availability for our sports programs and our partner organizations that also use these fields.

Needs

The top pressing needs are: 1). additional classroom space to meet this need in our community. We are presently utilizing all of our available classroom space and cannot meet the rising demand of families who want a private Christian education for their children.2). additional funds to assist families from the Nashville and Antioch areas to be able to afford a private Christian education. The financial aid we provide is solely based on the financial need of the student's family.

CEO Statement

Lighthouse Christian School was founded in 1979 and has served the Nashville/Antioch community for over 40 years offering a quality Christian education at an affordable cost for any parent wanting a private Christian education for their children. Our mission has been, ' to glorify God by offering a Christ-centered, quality education that assists parents in training their children to be disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ'. The ethnic and financial make-up of our school families is one of the most diverse in Nashville, especially among the private and independent schools, who normally have a minority base of 1% - 16% as stated on the ' Private School Review.com'. Over 61% of our school and 76% of our pre-school students are minorities (ie. African-American, Asian, Hispanic, Middle Eastern and others). Each year our students participate in numerous community projects through classroom and school-wide initiatives that include hosting the State of Tennessee Special Olympics Flag Football Tournament, the Peterson for Parkinson's Foundation Event, Second Harvest Food Bank and the American Heart association to name a few. In addition, we partner with and provide space to numerous local organizations that use our athletic fields and our facilities for their activities such as the Synergy Youth Soccer League, The Nashville United Soccer League, The Nashville Sports League, Men-of -Valor, Alcoholics Anonymous, Rescue 1 and Compassionate Hope that serves operations in eight nations. The life principles that are taught, lived and demonstrated by our faculty prepare our students to face life and the challenges it presents.

Board Chair Statement

When the congregation of Lighthouse Baptist Church made the decision to start LCS in 1979, it may have been the best decision of our life. It has been an amazing journey as Susan (my wife) and I have watched thousands of young children find their creative purpose and through both character and spiritual transformation begin to realize their wonderful potential. Our LCS team through these years have had high expectations from a great God. We have never be disappointed. This is truly an amazing school with its greatly diverse student body from every walk of life and many foreign countries. It is a beautiful rainbow of God's priceless creatures. For me to be a part of this institution has been humbling. In January 2010, after 31 years of being at Lighthouse, I stepped away from my staff position. I continue to participate at many levels, one of which was to serve on the LCS Board. In January 2012, I was asked to serve as Chairman of the LCS Board. Our family has always been proud to be a part of this noble institution and are excited to be involved in its future. The LCS Board has labored passionately this year to put in place, in conjunction with the LCS administrative team, a development plan to insure the continuation of LCS's high standards and growth for the future. As in our history we have believed, sacrificed and worked hard to accomplish great things, we again make that same commitment, believing that these new initiatives will also be successful. With the help of Extreme Makeover Home Edition and the Nashville community we have seen many goals met and great things have been accomplished. New buildings have arisen, more financial aid has been provided to students and the school continues to recruit well educated and committed faculty. Nevertheless, challenges lie ahead and as we go forward, new possibilities continue to appear. We ask for your support in providing for the future of Lighthouse Christian School as it increases in its influence. This institution is unique in its unremitting commitment to its original high mission. It remains loyal to the idea of the amazing potential of our children, the principles of spiritual formation around a Christ-centered life, the need for true character, and the heritage of a Christian world view. And there is still much work to be done to preserve this bastion for the benefit of our children, grandchildren and the generations to follow in this city. I hope you will join us in the continuation of these goals and objectives. Dr. Alfred G. Henson Founder and Chairman of the Board of LCS
