Mission

We provide loving care to people with life-threatening illnesses, support to their families, and service to the community in a spirit of enriching lives.

Background

We envision a world where dying is a sacred experience. Where time is set aside to feel gratitude for one's life, to heal emotional wounds, and to say goodbye to loved ones. A world where everyone receives personalized care, where caregivers and those facing loss are supported, and no one has to die alone.

Alive was founded in 1975 by local visionaries who knew in their hearts that there must be a better way to care for the dying and their loved ones. They envisioned a model of personalized clinical care delivered hand in hand with the emotional and spiritual support needed to navigate the end of a life. They saw a space where laughter could coexist with tears, where life would be celebrated, even as death was prepared for.

Alive was the third hospice in the country and the first in the Southeast. Founders Dr. John Flexner and Dr. David Barton are now members of the Tennessee Healthcare Hall of Fame for this pioneering contribution to end-of-life care.

We are proud to carry on their legacy.

Today, Alive is a trusted community institution with the privilege of providing comfort and peace to thousands at the end of life. We have given millions to help families with medical bills, built two residences that provide 24/7 care, established the only grief center in the area to help families heal, and developed community partnerships that are a source of mutual pride and strength.

Impact

Alive is the only nonprofit hospice in Middle Tennessee. Thanks to donor support, we are able to go above and beyond standard hospice care with special offerings for the whole community that include caregiver support, counseling, end-of-life care education, community building, and remembrance events.

Our 2022 Impact at a Glance:

• Hospice Care: We provided care to 4,947 patients and their families.

• We Honor Veterans: We served 513 veterans through our hospice care program.

• Pediatric Hospice: We offered care to 24 pediatric patients and their families.

• Palliative Care: We completed 20,784 palliative care visits across 7 HCA hospitals.

• Grief Support: Our programs engaged 2,491 unique participants, with 3,732 individual counseling sessions, 350 group sessions, and workshops, along with grief support for children through school-based programs, grief camps, and family retreats.

• Volunteer Support: Our dedicated volunteer contributed 11,298 hours, saving us $281,276.

• Community Support: We provided nearly $1.5 million in financial assistance to patients and families.

Our work goes far beyond the numbers. The heart of Alive is the love, compassion, and personalized service we bring to every patient and family in our care.

Needs

Alive is unique in being the only nonprofit hospice care provider serving the Middle Tennessee area.

Each year, Alive must raise more than $1.5 million to offset the expense of our mission-based financial support service. A considerable portion of the money raised goes towards providing financial assistance to cover hospice care expenses for our patients and their families that are otherwise not covered by insurance.
