Description
Our Artist Residency program is designed to incubate artists with big ideas in an environment that fosters community building, cross-pollination, and collaboration. This program includes fiscal sponsorship, project support, and administrative assistance to enable artists to grow as they pursue their big ideas. Each AIR has an agreement that is tailored to their unique individual needs. abrasiveMedia does not provide every aspect of the residency in-house; we utilize our rich network of organizations and individuals to curate connections for each of our artists to help them build portfolios that will enable their future career. Our philosophy is to 'start now, with what you have in hand.' We teach resource-mapping, collaborative relationship management, and how to scale a project for feasibility.

Description
Project Awake is a unique theatrical production performed live in schools; helping students discover their inner superhero and address issues they face. Part of what makes Project Awake so unique is that its an interdisciplinary art program. The production blends dance, martial arts, acrobatics, aerial arts, music, and acting to tell a story about overcoming adversities that students face every day: bullying, violence, sexual assault, and self-harm. Rather than preaching at students about what not to do, the program explores the idea of empowering the bystanders to become someone who believes in and acts on their talents and abilities to make a positive impact in their community. The ensemble cast, adorned in the elaborate costuming of the characters they portray, will be available for Q & A sessions with audiences after each show. We will also provide resources to the schools for student growth and development, as well as a curriculum for unpacking the story in class.

CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments

Our programs in the past have grown primarily in breadth; it is now time to grow in depth. We are working on ways to more effectively engage our audience in the long-term as we create interactions on individual levels while continuing to bring our programming to as many individuals as we are able to reach. It is very easy in the arts in Nashville to remain segregated, but we do not believe that is an optimal environment for creativity. We are building comprehensive inclusion in our governance board, staff, resident artists, and audiences so that we might be more equipped to reach a diverse audience through all of our programming without engaging in tokenism. We will begin by clearing the path of obstacles and opening doors for our artists, continue by holding the doors open long enough for all those we work with to pass through, and eventually we hope to enable all our collaborators to open doors on their own. This is both literal (we have disabled people on our staff who cannot get themselves in our doors on their own) and is also a metaphorical view of the work needed to restore communities and confront white supremacist systems. We do not do work for minority or underserved communities. We do work with people who represent a wide variety of communities. Everything we create and produce arises from the alchemy of those relationships. We believe the people are inherently creative, and that if we create a healthy environment for our people, their creativity will naturally flourish. We are an artists' organization, not an arts organization; we believe that by facilitating the artists we will directly impact the progression and meaningfulness of their art.
