Description
Lakewood Theatre (LTC) offers an annual Summer Workshop for Children 4 to 17 every year in June. 2019 will be the 26th year LTC offers these very popular workshops. The feedback we receive from parents on how their children have blossomed, their improved self confidence has given them much more self assurance, and they are much more composed and relaxed when required to do any kind of public speaking or give presentations at school, is most gratifying. Our philosophy is to recognize each child as an individual. LTC is committed to expanding our children and youth theatre programming to include other fine arts including dance, visual arts and voice/singing. Lakewood was first founded as a children's theatre program over 30 yrs ago. Mayor Briley has concerns over the decrease in after school programs and work opportunities available in particular for youth ages 14 and up. LTC Board Member, Tammy Lee England leads a program to offer free educational theatre arts activities once per week at Dupont-Hadley Middle School. The goal is to develop this program further in cooperation with Dupont-Hadley. Our councilman, Larry Hagar continues to encourage LTC working with Old Hickory Community Center. Creative Director, Mic Rex is in talks with them to offer some theatre programming on site there as well. One of our short term goals is to serve at least 25 children free of charge on site at Dupont-Hadley as a Theatre Fine Arts After school program

One of the physical characteristics of Lakewood Theatre is the front door which is painted red. As a way to gain momentum leading up to the Big Payback, the Marketing and Fundraising Committee developed Operation Lakewood. We invited patrons to donate whatever amount they wanted to by check or cash and place it in a red sealed envelope. Initially, this raised $1300.00. However, the board has now approved this as an ongoing fundraising campaign for every show as a way to re-build our building fund for much needed upgrades to the building, including but not limited to painting the back portion, signage(which is currently being worked on), an additional patron bathroom, green room upgrades. Although the BigPayback in 2016 did not raise the dollars Lakewood would have liked, Lakewood Theatre will be participating in the Big Payback again in 2016 as we raised nearly $5,000 during the Big Payback in 2015 and are hoping to double the amount this year! By increasing how many shows we do per season, this has helped add dollars to our overall budget as well as our building fund, which now has a little over $3,000 in it.

In an effort to maximize the use of our space and our talents, Lakewood continues community outreach. In past years, we rented our space when not in use for a nominal fee. Although we still do this, we are now allowing other artists and artistic entities(i.e. 3rd Knight Productions-for an adaptation of Medea, Flyin West, pilot of the web series, Bounty Mama by Bounty 1 Productions) to use our space free of charge. We have also developed and continue to strengthen partnerships with other theater companies and arts programs. Such as Miss Jeanne's Dinner Theater and Encore Theatre. In addition, we have continues our partnership with H.U.G.S.(Help Us Get Shoes) Lakewood continues to recycle and promote recycling during the run of our shows and other events.

CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments

As we take Lakewood Theater forward, one challenge we face is the fact that some of the programs are just launching. We are actively using social media, email blasts, grassroots canvassing and family friendly avenues to promote these events. However, creating awareness of these new programs is still growing. Initial response to these new programs is positive and we expect growth as we contine to develop them. Part of the success that we have envisioned is garnering business sponsorships and other fundraising possibilities such as a pancake breakfast, participation in Kroger community gifts, and in kind donations and grants to defray program and participation costs.
