Description
We partner with Macy's Department Store , Soles4Souls and Amerigroup to provide new coats to Pre-K through middle schools in the Metro system. Macys provides NEW coats, Soles4Souls receives the coats at their warehouse, and Amerigroup sorts the coats, then Assistance League of Nashville volunteers deliver the coats to the schools. This costs us no budgetary funds. Winter Warm-UP event is scheduled each year in October in order for students to receive these new warm coats before cold weather hits Middle Tennessee. Counselors at the schools give us the sizes of coats needed for the students in need and we distribute as ordered.

During the 2019-2020 fiscal year we had a budget line item of $3000 ($750 per school) to provide NEW books to 6 elementary schools for their libraries. Two of these schools received their books at the end of the 2019-2020 fiscal year. Due to the pandemic, the remaining 4 schools did not receive their books until the beginning of the 2020-2021 fiscal year. This program will be continued in the 2021-2022 fiscal year with the intent to grow it by adding more schools. The second part of this program is Read Across America in which volunteers read to elementary students in their classrooms. Typically this event is held in early March, close to Dr. Seuss's birthday. The pandemic prohibited in-person from reading in classrooms this year. As alternative, volunteers dressed in Cat-in-the-Hat, Thing1, and Thing2 costumes distributed 433 books to children and their parents participating in a drive-by literacy event.

The goal of Operation School Bell is to help prepare students for school and give them a positive starting point for learning and academic success. We want to increase students' self-esteem and encourage school attendance. One way we do that is to provide school children in need with NEW clothing, books, coats, and other items that may come to our attention. Through the PENCIL Foundation, we are a system-wide partner with Metro Nashville Public Schools.

CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments

With more than 77% of the MNPS students considered economically disadvantaged, the opportunities to provide new school clothing and other necessities are tremendous. We currently serve primarily elementary and middle school students through our Operation School Bell program.
We continue to recruit motivated volunteers and explore additional funding sources. We house our clothing inventory in a MNPS school and have a workroom there.
Challenges include a limited number of volunteer members, NO paid staff, and recruitment of technical volunteer staff.
