The Rock Castle Living History Festival is an annual, immersive, hands-on educational experience offered free of charge to thousands of Middle Tennessee public school students. Rock Castle contracts with more than 30 historic presenters, artisans, musicians, and craftspeople to provide students with a truly one-of-a kind, interactive learning opportunity. Historic demonstrators, docents, and educational performers dressed in period attire transform Rock Castle's grounds into a 18th century pioneer village on the Tennessee frontier; and the two-day event provides students with the unforgettable chance to experience the work, games, crafts, dance, music, and other aspects of daily living during the earliest days of our state's history.

Long-term Success
An annual event of nearly thirty years, the Rock Castle Living History Festival (also known as Daniel Smith Days) is one of the longest-standing educational initiatives in Middle Tennessee. It is not uncommon to have students attend whose parents attended when they were children, and the multi-generational investment/enjoyment of the event is certainly something worth celebrating. More than 3000 Middle Tennessee students attend the Sumner Harvest Living History Festival each year.
Short-term Success
The 2022 Rock Castle Living History Festival was saw the highest attendance in the event's 30+ year history. The enthusiasm for this event and the educational opportunities it provides for Middle Tennessee students are definitely highly valued, and we are excited to improve the educational experience even more in the upcoming year.
Program Success Monitored By
In addition to the quality control and cost analysis conducted by the Executive Director and staff, Rock Castle events are carefully monitored by a highly involved board of directors, a chief financial officer, and an independent CPA firm. Teachers, parents, and students are also invited to offer feedback of their experience at each Sumner Harvest Living History Festival, and we have received nothing but glowing reviews by those who have attended.

Rock Castle State Historic Site traditionally hosts an annual, free-to-the-public Nashville Symphony by the Lake event each June. At the time of this posting (January 13, 2021), remaining Covid concerns seem likely to prevent us from hosting a full Symphony event in 2021, but Rock Castle is in conversations with the Symphony about the possibility of hosting several smaller ensemble performances instead. Information will be updated as it becomes available. Rock Castle has been selected by the Nashville Symphony as an annual partner, and the Symphony's Community Concert facilitators have even adopted Rock Castle's logistical site plan for events as a template for other venues. More than 5,000 Middle Tennessee guests have attended each of the past three Symphony by the Lake events at Rock Castle, and we are eager to return to hosting the Nashville Symphony as soon as it is safe for us to do so.

Long-term Success
Rock Castle has hosted three Symphony by the Lake events in the past four years, and each of the concerts has attracted over 5,000 guests from all over Middle Tennessee.
Short-term Success
The Nashville Symphony chose to cancel all of their 2020 Community Concerts due to concerns over Covid-19, but even though the event was canceled, the Symphony by the Lake event remains one of Rock Castle's most eagerly anticipated events for the years to come. We have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from Middle Tennessee families about their experiences at the Symphony by the Lake Events, and we receive daily inquiries about whether or not the event will be able to occur in 2021. We are hopeful that it will it some form or capacity.

Long-term Success
We are approaching our 11th season of Summer Songwriter Nights, and the series has grown exponentially from when it began in 2010. Today, the events attract guests from all over Middle Tennessee and its contiguous states. Excepting events held during the Covid pandemic, each of the Summer Songwriter Nights generally attracts between 1000 and 1500 guests, and we have seen hundreds of positive relationships blossom out of these family-focused events.
Short-term Success
Covid concerns necessitated logistical changes to our most recent season of Summer Songwriter Nights, but even with these changes, we were still able to safely move forward with each of the scheduled events. The events each attracted more than 500 guests (even with Covid concerns what they were), and the events were successful because we were able to effectively spread people out on the expansive Rock Castle lawn.

Long-term Success
Rock Castle has successfully planned and hosted two Folk 'n Bluegrass Festivals in the past two years.
Short-term Success
Even with Covid concerns and torrential rain as complications, this past year's Folk 'n Bluegrass Fest still proved to be an incredible success. The logistics of the event had to be overhauled in the weeks leading up to it (to account for social distancing and a less than favorable weather forecast), but the event was able to be moved entirely under our pavilion and tents so that the event could move forward. The additional planning and flexibility necessitated by circumstances out of our control were met and addressed with efficiency and poise, and the 2nd annual Folk 'n Bluegrass Fest was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended.

Long-term Success
The Wonderland Egg Hunt is an annual, free-to-public holiday event that Rock Castle has been hosting for almost 15 years. It takes more than 100 volunteers to make the event happen, and more than 3000 children attend; but even with the logistical challenges of running several age-bracketed hunts and facilitating the stream-lined movement of so many guests on the property, the event has always been a tremendous success.
Short-term Success
The mandated closure of all Tennessee's state historic sites at the onset of the Covid pandemic resulted in the unavoidable cancellation of the 2020 Wonderland Egg Hunt, but Rock Castle's staff and volunteers had already stuffed over 100,000 eggs with candy in preparation for the event. When we learned that the event would have to be canceled, Rock Castle staff and volunteers from several Middle Tennessee high schools (National Honor Society students) reached out to elementary schools and day care facilities to see if families would be interested in individually packaged bags of 25 to 50 eggs. The response was overwhelming, and we were able to distribute all 100,000 candy-filled eggs to families all over Middle Tennessee. In the midst of all the fear and unemployment brought about by Covid-19, it definitely felt good to be able to provide the stuffed eggs as a small but meaningful gift to our local families.

Long-term Success
Rock Castle has planned and hosted the Castle of Villains event for three consecutive years, and the event has grown exponentially since its inception. This past year's event attracted nearly 1500 guests, and we are already working on ways to allow for increased growth in 2021.
Short-term Success
Even with the logistical changes and capacity considerations necessitated by the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, the event was still the most heavily attended Castle of Villains event in the three years we have been hosting it. To ensure appropriate social distancing, the event stations were spread out all over Rock Castle's 18-acre property, and guests had a ghoulishly good time meeting all of the classic fairytale villains.

Long-term Success
Rock Castle's Holiday Open House has been a favorite holiday event of Middle Tennessee families for more than two decades, and we are always excited to be able to feature Middle Tennessee choral groups, 18th century musicians, and educational presenters at the event. The event's popularity has grown exponentially in the past ten years, and it has become an exceptional conduit for strengthening relationships and growing friendships out of a shared love of Tennessee history.
Short-term Success
Even with the challenges and necessary changes brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, the most recent Holiday Open House was the most highly attended in the event's history. To ensure effective social distancing, we extended the event's typical time frame and provided a number of outdoor options for guests to explore and enjoy the property as well as the historic home.
