Budget
$20,000.00
Description
Some students cannot afford instructional items (books, reeds, practice chanters, practice pads, sticks), let alone a drum or set of bagpipes. Our band would love to be in the position to provide loaner instruments or even give an instrument to a student with need. Program budget is based on an estimated price of $2000 per set of bagpipes and/or drums, case, and one year's reeds or sticks, and the potential to award up to 10 sets in a year's time for students in need.

Description
Three 16 week beginning bagpipe classes. Via practice chanter and the instructional book 'Beginning the Bagpipe', we work on the fundamentals of the instrument, scales and playing the first 1-3 tunes on the chanter. Beginner classes need chanters and books, totaling $100 total per student. This funding would make chanters and books free to students. Space for these lessons is currently provided by Woodmont Christian Church, but we're at capacity in the space we're in with 10 students and we need to find new space in order to grow to 20 or more.

We offer 20 week beginning drum classes. Using sticks, practice pads and the James Laughlin book 'Guide to Pipe Band Drumming: the Essentials', we work on the fundamentals of rhythm, rudiments, and playing the first 1-3 marches on the practice pad. Beginner classes need sticks, pads and books, totaling $80 total per student. This funding would make these items free to students. Space for these lessons is currently provided by Woodmont Christian Church, but we're at capacity in the space we're in with 5 students and we need to find new space in order to grow to 10 or more.

Description
Throughout the year, the band and some students travel to competition weekends called Highland Games across the South and Midwest. Highland Games offer solo and band competitions for bagpipers and drummers of all ages and skill levels. NP&D aspires to travel to bigger, more prestigious competitions such as the Games in Dunedin, FL, Pleasanton, CA, and Canada's Maxville, ON. To date, we have never made these trips due to the considerable expense and logistical complications; however, with careful planning and fundraising, we believe these competitions could be opportunities for our band in the future. This program budget would fund 2-3 of these bigger competition weekends.
