Mission

You Have the Power...Know How to Use It, Inc. is a not-for-profit agency dedicated to educating, advocating, and empowering victims and communities impacted by violent crime. We believe that knowledge is power - with the right information, you can reduce your chances of becoming a victim, but if you are victimized, the right information can help you put the pieces of your life back together.

Background

In 1988, Andrea Conte was kidnapped in the parking lot of her retail shop, Conte Philips. After a struggle, she escaped - but so did the kidnapper. Months later, he was arrested for the murder of a young woman, and both cases went to trial. Navigating the law enforcement and criminal justice systems revealed gaps in victims' rights at that time and the fact that crime survivors have knowledge that could help others avoid or prevent crime. Advocating for victims became a passion, particularly regarding preventable crimes such as domestic violence, child sexual abuse, sexual assault, elder abuse, and bullying.

Impact

YHTP annually strives to:
Train over 150 victim impact facilitators nationwide with an acclaimed YHTP curriculum. YHTP's victim impact program is currently offered in the Davidson County Sheriff's Department facilities.
Educate elementary, middle, high school, and college students on recognizing and preventing bullying, domestic violence, child sexual abuse, and healthy relationships throughout Tennessee.
Conduct educational programs on child sexual abuse recognition and prevention for school and day-care professionals, and conduct youth impact curriculum with at-risk juveniles in conjunction with school educators, houses of worship, youth organizations, and Juvenile Courts where possible.
Present statewide forums to curb the escalating problem of human trafficking in Tennessee, collaborating with the TBI, AncoraTN (formerly End Slavery Tennessee), State Attorney General's Office, and District Attorneys.

YHTP's recent significant projects include: Completed 'No Girl's Dream' documentary on Human Trafficking in Tennessee. Reported to the Tennessee HUGGS Home Trainer's Institute on domestic violence and safety planning. Appointed to the Sexual Offender Treatment Board and Mayor's Domestic Death Review Team. Presented to educational professionals at the Alignment Nashville Social Emotional Learning conference on how to create an integrated classroom free from bullying. Presented to the underserved LGBT community on child sexual abuse and bullying and trained 30 facilitators in YHTP's Youth Impact Curriculum, which teaches accountability to young adults.

Needs

Funds to expand our educational forums to under-served communities and populations.

It is an honor to be able to work with so many other agencies and government officials throughout Tennessee to provide educational opportunities to the community and help those who have been victimized become survivors and return to strengthen and improve our communities.
