Description
Most volunteer organizations serving the medical profession donate medical scholarships to the community for the purpose of attracting young medical professionals to their hospitals as a form of workforce advocacy. The scholarship program sponsored by volunteers at Sumner Regional Medical Center started almost immediately after the Volunteer Auxiliary was formed in 1972. Since that time, thousands of dollars have helped local students achieve their academic goals and several have returned to SRMC to practice in their fields of expertise. Since 2008, the volunteers have been donating one medical scholarship to the Foundation Office at Volunteer State Community College's Allied Health Program for any Sumner County resident. The scholarship covers one year's tuition. To keep the selection process objective, the college selects the recipient each year from applicants.

Friends of SRMC, Inc. earn funds through vendor sales to provide gas vouchers for these patients.

Eligible patients receiving treatment from either HighPoint Therapy Services Lymphedema or Sumner Wound Care need assistance with purchasing compression garments due to insurance not covering in most cases based on approved budget line item. By wearing compression garments, Lymphedema patients can see relief in early-stage fluid retention before it worsens. Compression garments can also aid in keeping patients active, which is a necessity, and keeping fluid from returning to affected limbs in more advanced cases. Patients undergoing Wound Care treatment who wear compression garments can see an increase in the pressure in the tissue under the skin. This reduces swelling by moving the excess fluid that builds up in the legs back into the blood vessels. The pressure on the legs also reduces the ability of the veins to expand. This keeps the blood flowing evenly, stopping it from flowing backward and causing congestion. Improving venous flow speeds up wound healing and assists in preventing infection.

The purpose of the luncheon is for cancer group participants to get to know one another better, to share their stories of survival, and to encourage those still going through treatments. Still Fabulous-A luncheon is offered one every quarter. The guest program is typically for ladies. The women receive a make-up kit from Danyel Cosmetics. Professional cosmetologists/aestheticians offer their services in the class free of charge

| The increased need of patients for assistance with food, clothes, transportation, SleepSacks for infants, cancer support groups and scholarships challenges Friends of Sumner Regional Medical Center, Inc. to be tirelessly creative in fundraising efforts to provide for these needs. For less than $45,000 per year, the volunteer non-profit meets these and other assistance for patients at Sumner Regional in addition to the organization's administrative costs. Hundred percent of the annual budget is earmarked for the Mission of Friends of SRMC, Inc. with hopes to increase that percentage in the future. |
