Mission
We are called to prepare excellent Disciple ministers through our supportive community of faith.
Background
Disciples Foundation, Inc., began in 1927 as a partnership between Vanderbilt Divinity School and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) to educate and prepare outstanding ministers for the church. The Foundation began a residential facility as part of its model in the 1940s. Education in Vanderbilt's rigorous and ecumenical academic environment, coupled with denomination-specific preparation at the Disciples House in a community of student colleagues, has given our graduates the best of modern scholarship, practice-oriented skills for Disciples in ministry, a nurturing family of like-minded believers, and a network of supportive colleagues that lasts a lifetime.
Impact
Disciples Divinity House (Disciples Foundation) has helped to educate and shape over 500 ministers for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). They have served primarily (65%) in local congregations throughout the United States, but many others have served in ministries of justice and action and care and higher education as well, including executive and academic leadership positions at Disciples of Christ seminaries.
Needs
DDH's most pressing needs include: 1. Student sponsorships-on the average it costs $11,000 annually to sponsor a Disciples student (tuition and rent support) while attending VDS; 2. Endowments to support student scholarships and Disciples House operations- Endowments can be named funds; 3. Assistance with facility upgrades and 'greening.'We are working to make the facility as environmentally-friendly as possible and have upgraded windows and the HVAC in our student housing .
CEO Statement
Our graduates are outstanding ministers. They serve in churches, in theological and higher education, in agencies of social justice (many here in Nashville and Tennessee), as chaplains and counselors, as teachers and writers. Our current students are the best in the Christian Church and the Divinity student population. They have distinguished themselves as student leaders and at graduation with awards well out of proportion to their numbers. When they leave here, they are committed and qualified.
