Mission
Friends of Green Hills is a 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to maintaining our neighborhood park, building community, & increasing walk and bike connectivity to nearby green spaces where we love to walk and play.
Background
Friends of Green Hills park started because the park lacked a water fountain. Once the water fountain was installed, we never looked back. We have hosted a community festival since 2017 and have added improvements to the park each year. Our park is small, but mighty, and has alot of potential to better serve the neighborhood and the middle school that is located next door.
Impact
Since Friends of Green Hills Park formed in 2015: The annual Green Hills Park Festival takes place every September. Parnassus donated a Little Library that has been installed at the Park, and Parnassus regularly supplies books. The Parks Department installed a water fountain. Public Works built a $500,000 sidewalk in and alongside the park on Belmont Park Terrace. In the southwest corner, a new entrance and path was created. In the northwest corner, a sidewalk now connects the park to Arden Place. The landscape of the park has changed with the addition of grass berms for play and picnics. Improvements to the wetlands have been planned, through a collaboration with the Cumberland River Compact and Lipscomb 's Institute for Sustainable Practice. The entrance sign has been moved to the front of the road, the chain link fence on the corner has been replaced by a wooden fence, and a wooden shed has been built to hide the porta-potty from the front entrance view. Evergreen trees are planted around the shed. Seven portable benches have been placed in the park. They can be moved around for convenience or to be located in the shade. In addition, tree stumps and balance beams have been added under a large shade tree.
