It has been well documented that golf is a game that can pass on positive core values to those who play it, especially to the young people who take up the game. Golf teaches so many life lessons and once absorbed, can serve as a compass to youth as they mature. Kids that play the game in a structured program, like those offered by the Tennessee Golf Foundation are 50% more likely to be an adult golfer later in life. Keeping programs affordable and accessible give as many kids as possible the opportunity to play. The result: getting clubs into the hands of thousands of kids not only keeps the game healthy, it provides them the opportunity to be better citizens. As a bonus, the game gives junior golfers a chance to develop great friendships while providing a great setting to spend some quality parent-child bonding time. In 2005, the Tennessee Golf Foundation continued to build on its vision statement to become the premier junior golf program in the country by focusing on five key areas of youth participation: JUNIOR TOUR: 1,060 statewide participants (ages 4-18) played in an average of 4.9 events from June to August. 150 tournaments administered. TENNESSEE PGA JUNIOR GOLF ACADEMY: 419 campers enrolled, 26% received some sort of financial aid with 11% receiving full scholarships. THE FIRST TEE: 350 participants in the Nashville program including after school and home school sessions. Other chapters are located in Memphis, Knoxville, Chattanooga and Smyrna, receive support from the Foundation. LITTLE COURSE AT CONNER LANE PROGRAMS: 630 different kids (ages 4-17) participated in the golf programs run through our home course. SPECIAL OLYMPICS: Over 250 different participants took part in seven state events, with five skill levels ranging from basic to playing 18 holes. STATEWIDE DATABASE: Chattanooga (325), Knoxville (534), Memphis (735), Nashville (2,195), Tri-Cities (320). 297 former participants are now playing golf at the college level.
