The Multicultural Outreach Program (MOP) is specifically designed to address mental health issues relevant to individuals whose primary language is not English. Our Multicultural Services Coordinator, who is bilingual in Spanish, receives calls from Spanish speakers on our Helpline, works with mental health providers to increase services available and ensure appropriate referrals to immigrants and refugees, provides education and builds coalitions with other social service agencies as well as advocates for the mental health needs of this population. Support groups, implemented for women, youth and their parents, are helping to improve self-reliance, wellness, and opportunities for success. All of these services are provided free of charge to the clients, making MOP integral in improving access to health care for low-income, disenfranchised individuals and families.

The Erasing the Stigma Program provides mental health presentations to schools, businesses, faith based organizations, civic clubs, libraries and after-school programs. The purpose of this program is to provide a non-threatening way to inform children and the general public about mental illnesses. In doing so, this program aims to reduce the stigma associated with mental health and mental health conditions, which is the primary reason individuals delay seeking help for mental health issues. I.C. HOPE, the Ambassador of Mental Wellness, reads stories to children, works with students to complete an activity, or makes I.C. HOPE puppets for students to take home and share with friends and family. In FY 19-20, ETS made presentations to 26,850 students and adults in 16 counties to teach children about anger management, stress management, bullying, and how to handle a bad day; and older youth were taught about body image, depression, and suicide prevention.

CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments

MHA MidSouth believes that education is power, that mental illnesses are real and treatable, that suicide is the most preventable form of death, and that our aging mentors with Alzheimer's should receive quality, affordable care. MHA MidSouth makes this happen through community education and awareness, through professional continuing education seminars, by providing support groups for the young and the old, by teaching children that asking for help is not a sign of weakness, and by attending to the needs of all Tennesseans - rich and poor, urban and rural, immigrant and refugee, bullied children and aging senior. Annually, one in four Tennesseans can be diagnosed with a mental illness. It might be mild and easily overcome through therapy, or it might be severe and managed only by medication. Mental Health America is an ever present resource through the help-line, on the internet, one-on-one care consultations, or live seminar events. Without MHAMT's objective, impartial referrals and resources, many more lives would end up in hospitals, nursing homes, sidewalk benches, or cemeteries. You can make a difference by joining us to accomplish our mission to erase the stigma associated with mental illnesses and to bring hope to children, adults, and senior citizens who daily encounter hopelessness. Through your donations, volunteerism, leadership, and referrals, you can make a difference. Call us today at (615) 269-5355 to start making a difference.
