Description
Treads & Trails foster healthy & active lifestyles for underserved youth. Children average 7 hours of screen time daily, and only 1 in 5 receive the daily recommended thirty minutes of active play. Statistics decrease in low-income and minority populations. Through our Treads & Trails program, Can'd Aid rallies volunteers and provides them with equipment, tools, and instructions to build bikes. When builds are complete, bikes are presented in a surprise assembly to an entire grade at a Title 1 school. Professional athletes are part of the assembly, teaching the students about the importance of exercise, safety, and never giving up on their dreams. Riding bikes at a young age has been linked to higher academic performance, fosters positive character and social traits, and increases adolescent responsibility. Socially, the program helps to bridge the gender gap between boys and girls and promotes social interaction between children and adolescents.
Program Successes
Success in Nashville has culminated in ongoing, long-term partnerships with community members who leverage Can'd Aid's programs to give back. The Journeys Group is among the corporate partnerships who engaged with Can'd Aid successfully to provide volunteer opportunities for local employees and provided funding for impactful giving. Since partnering with the national nonprofit organization in 2021, Journeys has seen a 100% employee engagement rate at its 70+ annual community outreach events including in Nashville.

Long-term Success
Can'd Aid has rallied volunteers, donors, and community partners to provide Tennessee's youth with over 2,500 bikes and skateboards, 100 musical instruments, 1,150 art kits with almost 40 nonprofit centers and school districts in the Nashville area.
Success has been demonstrated by an increase of beneficiaries, partners, volunteers, and donors year-over-year. In 2019, for example, we donated 24 new instruments and 48 bicycles to three schools with the help of 40 local volunteers. In 2021, Can'd Aid grew its community giving with the help of 1,027 volunteers to reach 1,289 students, donating 339 skateboards, 650 art kits, and 300 bikes.
Other successes include the implementation of organizational efficiencies & hiring employees who live in the community, helping to identify in-need organizations, streamline operations, and decrease costs. We have grown our network of nonprofit organizations, musicians, and professional athletes who interact with with students.
Short-term Success
In 2022, Can'd Aid built and donated 1,600 bikes and skateboards to Nashville-area youth. A Tennessee-focused sponsorship from Nashville-based company The Journeys Group over the past two years has helped fund Can'd Aid's donations, increasing the frequency of local donations as well as the number of bikes, skateboards, and art kits donated at each event.
In 2023, Can'd Aid is also developing a Nashville Advisory Committee, whose members will work as liaisons and guide the nonprofit by helping to assess local needs, prioritize program initiatives, and serve as Can'd Aid's voice in the community.
Program Success Monitored By
Surveys are provided to teachers and school representatives before a donation, immediately following a donation, and years after the donation. Surveys are short, to limit the time needed by teachers, and include questions to measure the improvement of students' mental health and exercise. Community responses, sentiments, and impacts are also monitored by ongoing press coverage, media mentions, and social media engagement.
