Kimberly's Experience: I become a registered nurse in 2012, and immediately began working as a hospice nurse. For nearly 12 years, I worked in many different roles in the field of hospice. I witnessed a growing need for the underserved, who lacked the basic needs of living, and inadvertently, the basic needs of being able to die with dignity and respect. Time after time, I was so torn to see so many people not able to have this basic need met. I thought I was unable to provide for this need due to my own socio-economic restraints, being a mother, and not having the knowledge to know where to start. Thankfully, in the spring of 2021, the desire on my heart was brought to fruition after a chance encounter with an old friend at a baseball game. There we shared our desire shared desire to have a home for the dying poor. Together, we co-founded the beginnings of the Heart of Mary House and began the journey of researching, visiting other homes around the country, and securing the start up funds to begin. This was achieved from start to finish in almost an exact years time.

We have been blessed with around 25 volunteers who serve at the house on a regular basis. In addition to our regulars, we have over 75 volunteers who have at least served once in the home. As fortunate as we are to have these volunteers, we have realized that when caring for the wholeness of the human person it is important to offer a more consistent model of care. Hiring caregivers to fill this need will allow us to be more sustainable as an organization, but will also enable us to produce a better quality of care. Hiring staff is new to us and being able to define the type of work that is done in the home is critical to obtaining the right people for the job. We are also seeking 'mission minded' individuals because of our inability to pay a more competitive salary. We are also working with a limited budget to provide the most thorough training possible.
