National Federation of the Blind of Tennessee Inc
Programs
Budget
$5,000.00
Description
It is reported that only around 15% of blind people read brail. There are many reasons for this fact, but we see thru research that being able to read, for a blind person, increases the chances of employment exponentially. For this reason, the National Federation of the Blind Tennessee hosts a summer enrichment brail program for blind students. BELL allows blind children to increase their independence and confidence. The blind people of Tennessee both fund, administrate, and implement this program ourselves.

Beneficiaries
People with physical disabilities
At-Risk Populations
Children and Youth (0 - 19 years)
Long-term Success
We just completed our 10th BELL program at Austin Peay University, where we had 25 blind students learning brail, mobility, and other independent living skills. Some of the activities were navigating independently to and from a General Jackson cruise, as well as, a Vanderbilt LifeFlight helicopter landing near Austin Peay University for the blind kiddos to explore and learn about what the Paramedics do.
Short-term Success
We began our BELL program 10 years ago where we only had four blind students for the week.
