Mission

The Johnson Community Foundation organizes the Southeast Egg Hunt and Festival for underserved children in Antioch Southeast Nashville, specifically for ages preschool to fourth grade. This event, led by committed volunteers, evolves each year to include exciting prizes, a variety of entertainment, and educational resources, ensuring a fulfilling experience for families.

Background

In 2004, founder Karen Johnson collaborated with a group of parent volunteers from the Antioch Southeast Nashville community to create an annual egg hunt. Given the area's strong family-oriented neighborhoods, it was the perfect setting for a large-scale event that was previously unavailable. This initiative arose from parents' wishes for local children to engage in a significant event that would showcase local businesses, including small enterprises, while also celebrating the rich cultural diversity found in this part of the city. Unlike similar events in other areas that often require a fee, this one is entirely free. Thus, a cherished tradition for Southeast Nashville Antioch was established.

Impact

Since its inception over 20 years ago, the event has experienced remarkable growth, drawing in more than 7,000 attendees. It has also welcomed a wider array of entertainment and vendors, along with the backing of an expanding number of elected officials, organizations, and businesses.

Needs

The annual event showcases a variety of local vendors and stage entertainment, featuring a well-known local DJ, performances by school bands and cheerleaders, as well as culturally diverse dance groups, and a variety of beloved children's characters in costume, alongside beloved sports mascots. A highlight of the day is the age-specific egg hunts, which include a special hunt designed for children with special needs, where kids eagerly search for prize tickets hidden in select eggs. Prizes vary from coloring books and age-appropriate toys to bicycles and iPads. We are also enhancing the event with educational elements for all attending children and introducing a distinctive personal scholarship investment program.
