Mission
Communities In Schools (CIS) of Tennessee's mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.
Background
CIS of Tennessee began serving Nashville students in 2012 and has grown today to serving 36 schools with more than 10,000 students across the state. CIS of Tennessee works to remove the non-academic barriers that prevent student success in the classroom. In partnership with local school districts, we provide daily school-based interventions to students in grades K-12 to address academic failure, truancy, behavioral issues, social service needs, and more.
Impact
CIS is the most effective dropout prevention program in America. We are the ONLY dropout prevention program in the nation proven to increase graduation rates while simultaneously decreasing the dropout rate. We have learned from our experience that more support means more success. The amazing gains both personally and academically that students achieved would not have been accomplished without the support of committed investors who recognized the value of the services CIS provides to address emotional, educational, and recreational gaps.
Below is a summary of CIS of Tennessee's results for the 2023-24 school year:
• Over 19,000 students received schoolwide supports
• 1,578 students were case managed
• Served 42 schools across 14 counties
IMPACT
Results based on the percentage of case-managed students statewide that made progress toward/achieved their individualized goal(s).
• 70% improved their attendance
• 71% increased their social emotional learning
• 93% of students were promoted to the next grade level
• 95% of students graduated
Needs
Other than continuing to adapt to support students through COVID and a challenging school year, our priority challenge is to scale our work to meet the needs of all those students across the state who are struggling to consistently attend and be successful in school. We have expanded in the past three years to high schools in the most economically distressed counties, but there is still much unmet need, both in the counties we currently serve as well as in many others. While growth is always challenging, the competitive advantage of CIS-TN is that our program works. CIS is often cited as the most successful integrated student support model in the country. The strength of the model and the supporting data provide incredible opportunities for growth in Tennessee. The challenge will be to take the high-quality CIS-TN program to scale in those communities that need and desire partnership.
