OTN is committed to building relationships with individuals experiencing homelessness through consistent, trauma informed outreach. OTN provides individualized services, which can include but is not limited to assistance gaining housing ready documents; connecting individuals to physical, mental health care, and/or substance abuse treatment; providing clothing, camping supplies, and meals; providing housing navigation and move-in assistance. OTN also puts in extra time and care during the winter months by canvassing to ensure safety and survival of those living outside. We ensure they are informed of their options for shelter and if they choose to remain outside, OTN provides safety planning and items necessary for remaining warm and safe. Our ultimate goal is not only to help people move into permanent housing, but also for them to experience the healing and hope that comes from supportive relationships.

Description
At OTN, we help people who are drowning in the waters of poverty and despair, but we don't stop there. We also go upstream to see why so many people are in those waters in the first place. The rise of mass homelessness in the U.S. was spurred largely by inequitable policies and federal cuts to affordable housing and social safety nets. If we're going to work toward ending homelessness, we must actively challenge unjust laws and policies while enacting solutions at the systemic level. Our advocacy program works with local, state, and national partners to address the need for more affordable housing, to end the criminalization of homelessness, and to support those who are living outdoors for lack of adequate housing and shelter space. Focus Areas Include: Affordable Housing, Ending the Criminalization of Poverty and Homelessness, Encampment Support, and Equitable Development

We believe that in order to break cycles of poverty and homelessness, we must first understand those cycles. We also believe that it is possible to engage issues of homelessness in thoughtful, meaningful, sustainable, and justice-oriented ways. To this end, we facilitate educational opportunities in the community. We currently provide educational sessions and trainings that are facilitated by OTN staff and our friends with lived experience. All our sessions are grounded in evidence-based practices and a systemic understanding of homelessness. Examples of training include: Trauma Informed De-escalation, Motivational Interviewing and Active Listening, and Winter Outreach Training.

CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments

First, Open Table Nashville's biggest opportunity is to continue doing its unique work placing friends without homes in both shelter and community - a resource no other local service provider offers. In fact, because OTN's friends are both housed & surrounded with caring peers & providers, agencies providing health care, food assistance, & job placement can take effect in ways not possible when people aren't housed. Second, OTN has the opportunity to expand its relationship with universities from four to six. OTN exceeds requirements for internships, service-learning, & fellowship placements. Educational experiences provide authentic engagement leading to reflection on concepts of service, companionship, responsibility, & community for undergraduate & graduate students in social work, sociology, & religion. Finally, OTN's educational opportunities with churches & civic groups continue to grow. OTN staff & volunteers provide training on causes of poverty & homelessness, how to engage & respond to individuals seeking assistance, & ministries & programs that can contribute to healthier communities for everyone . OTN's challenges include financial stability and affordable housing. First, because OTN receives 0% government funding, the organization has to depend upon private donations to keep open seats around the table. Second, it is no secret that Nashville lacks affordable housing for people living in the lowest percentage GMI. If we are to end homelessness, we have to have homes for people to move into.
