Description
Medical care and treatment is an enduring program for new and ongoing health issues of HCW dogs to include sanctuary dogs. It involves all medical care for health issues required to enable healthy, comfortable and happy dogs. It also includes any follow-on or continuing treatment and medications; and ultimately end-of-life care for sanctuary dogs. In 2019, we took 2 special needs 3 week old puppies that had been attacked in a puppy mill. They weighed 1.35 and .75#; malnourished and missing parts of their hind legs. At 16 weeks, with 24/7 care, they're doing well but will need surgeries, care and carts as they grow. We have 5 additional puppy mills dogs that just arrived that will need vet care and treatment. In 2017 we took 6 special needs babies from a hoarder rescue with eye issues, hair loss, epilepsy, skeletal anomalies, etc. We've vetted, spay/neutered, with required treatment and surgeries. Two have been adopted; 3 are ready for adoption and 1 requires continued care for epilepsy. We have 15 dogs in sanctuary with issues ranging from cancer to age-related issues.

Description
Provide comfort, care, and special needs, love; specialized/fresh food mixtures to meet each dog's needs; meds and vet care to keep them comfortable; vet care and meds; socialization, walks, play time, cuddle time, whatever dogs need for comfort and happiness. Meds and vet care include progress checks and treatment for eye, ears, endocrine issues, heart, cancer, infections, and mobility. A tremendous amount of time and love is poured into our sanctuary dogs' lives. We are also able to take dogs when people are end stage terminally ill, in hospice or pass away. These dogs are often seniors and not well cared for as owners become ill, and often need substantial medical care. For whatever time they are with us, the transformation from coming to us "broken" to improved health, comfort, mobility, love and freedom is amazing. We are so blessed to love them and offer them peace. We make sure every dog is cherished and no dog crosses the rainbow alone or afraid at HCW.
Long-term Success
Improved health, immunity systems, quality of life and comfort; Increased activity for seniors. We make sure every dog is cherished and no dog crosses the rainbow alone of afraid. We love these dogs fiercely, and cannot remember one time when we helped with end of life transition without regrets and guilt, even though we know it's a blessing to let them go. We feel fortunate for the time these precious souls are able to share with us.

Our three program approach is designed to give HCW dogs the best possible quality of life while finding loving, permanent homes, and for the whole of their life. First, we focus on getting our dogs healthy through our Ingress/Assessment Program. We identify and treat their immediate and recurring problems, followed by vaccinations, preventative treatment and spay/neuter as required. Most of the dogs coming into rescue require dental, often resulting in multiple extractions for the dog to be comfortable and pain free. Finally, we sustain their health through proper diet, required medications and medical treatments for their diseases and compromised immune systems, along with preventative and well-being supplements, love and extra care through our Sustainment/Preventative Program.

CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments

We are challenged every day to care for the sick, injured, abused, neglected and homeless companion animals - donors, supporters, adopters and partners help us feed and care for our rescues, and change the future for many companion animals and the people who will cherish them. Because of their commitment and support, HCW and other rescue dogs remain safe, healthy, and loved; and many dogs now live with new forever families. Our primary challenge is funding to rescue and sustain the care of HCW dogs. We continually look for enduring partnerships and donors, and fundraising opportunities, as we continue to make a difference and a better future for all rescues. Our team works hard to get the word out about HCW to grow support and donors to help more dogs and connect with loving families. Our adopters are an awesome part of our network and are critical to offering testimonials and spreading the word. We are a small team but a very dedicated one - we work to remain organized and efficient, with good governance and management, planning/course correcting when needed, and efficient/effective use of our resources so we can focus on the dogs. Everything we do is for the dogs.
