Mission
Street Theatre Company is a professional non-profit arts organization dedicated to pioneering innovative modern theatre in Nashville. Our aim is to engage our audience with universal stories that speak to the human experience and challenge conversation, to support local artists, to provide arts education to children of all ages, and to foster a new generation of theatre arts participants and supporters.
Background
STC's theatrical philosophy is "excellence with heart." The arts are a vital part of a thriving community, and STC's dedication to high-quality performances is evidenced by the fact that STC has now gained recognition as one of the top theatrical arts organizations in Nashville along with organizations such as Tennessee Repertory Theatre and Nashville Children's Theatre. STC maintains that while producing high-quality work, it is also important to provide a positive and rewarding experience for those involved. This is evidenced in the number of actors, technicians, and production team members who return to work with STC multiple times. Additionally, STC has a year-round active youth program. STC believes young people experiencing the arts encourages the development of social skills, conflict resolution, literacy, problem-solving, expression, teamwork, self-confidence, social tolerance and so much more. STC is dedicated to involving young people in the many aspects of theatre; teaching theatre skills through workshop programs, reaching out to the community through classes and volunteer work at local youth-oriented organizations, and casting young actors in mainstage shows where they work with and learn from professional performers. STC also produces a full length children's show each summer and fall featuring area youth, and brings the experience of live art to area schools through performances such as the tour to elementary schools of No More Secrets, a social service play about the prevention of sexual abuse. STC's first production was in March of 2005. Since that time, STC has shown its dedication to plays and musicals that are not only accessible to the community, but leave the audience with something to discuss. Other shows have included: Hairspray, Avenue Q, The Full Monty, The Wiz, Bat Boy, Evita, Popcorn, One flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Once on this Island, The Great American Trailer Park Musical, Caroline or Change, Memphis, Dogfight, Passing Strange, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, and much, much more. All shows feature ethnically diverse casts, and all feature young people working alongside professional actors.
Impact
In 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 Street Theatre Company was voted as one on Nashville's Best Local Theatre Companies in Nashville Scene's Best Of Reader's Poll. During our 2019 season, our Mainstage presented productions of Light in the Piazza, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Sweat, Be More Chill, and Toxic Avenger. Our ClassAct Dramatic youth program led performances of Spring Awakening, Mary Poppins Jr., Zombie Prom and Holes. We look forward to our first full season post-Covid in 2022!
Needs
Corporate sponsorships and recurring donors are needed to support the operating budget of our 2022 mainstage season, ranging from $2,000 to $10,000 per program. We also need Volunteers who are interested in all production areas such as show tech, ushering, group sales, corporate sponsorships, production assistance, grant-writing, and administrative duties. Donations of paint, building materials, props, costumes, etc., to assist with production budgets.
CEO Statement
Street Theatre is embarking on a second decade of bringing quality theater-on-the-edge to Nashville. Our constant goal is to make quality theater as accessible as possible. As always, our show budgets focus on diverse talent and artists leading us to spend more on people than on any other budget line.
Board Chair Statement
Street Theatre Company is a small theatre company in size, but is led by a dynamic artistic committee and board of directors, who together have a huge vision for what Street Theatre Company can and will become. Our struggles, like most non-profits, include financing, but we are addressing these needs through grant writing, performances, new dynamic leadership and the formation of an artistic committee. As we continue to move forward, we have our yearly fundraiser, which helps raise our profile in the city and build our coffers. We are excited about the direction in which STC is moving and look forward to your assistance.
