RESET - Raising Economic Security to Enjoy Thriving - is an innovative, collaborative program designed to support aging in place, boost financial security and reduce barriers to accessing financial empowerment services. It draws upon the strengths and successful outcomes of five established local organizations - AgeWell, United Way's Financial Empowerment Center, FiftyForward, Needlink Nashville and TN Justice Center by linking their programs through a shared, closed-loop data and referral system, creating a network to better serve older Nashvillians (50 years and older) and help them age in place by streamlining application processes for multiple benefit programs, providing better access to free financial counseling and assistance in accessing sources of supplemental income.
RESET was created through a six month planning process in 2023 led by AgeWell and United Way with input from older adults, nonprofits, Metro Nashville and faith communities. The program launched in 2024.

AgeWell is pleased to partner with organizations across the state and lead the Tennessee Coalition for Better Aging (TCBA). TCBA promotes the general welfare of older Tennesseans and their families through partnerships that mobilize resources to educate and advocate for important policies and programs. AgeWell Executive Director, Grace Smith, and board member, Dr. Jim Powers, serve as TCBA Co-Chairs.

In Spring 2021, TCBA hosted three virtual meetings and launched an advocacy campaign to Reimagine Long Term Services and Supports in Tennessee. Our collective efforts have led to increased state investments in home and community-based services, more support for Grandparents raising grandchildren, and elevating the TN Commission on Aging & Disability to cabinet level through the merged Dept. of Disability & Aging. To learn more & join in our collaborative advocacy, please visit TCBA's website https://www.coalitionforbetteraging.com/
Program Successes
In June 2021, TCBA sent recommendations to TennCare which helped inform their application for federal ARPA funds for HCBS.

In April 2022, following conversations with TCBA leadership, the TN Comptroller's Office updated their Senior Long-Term Care in TN report providing trends and options for state leaders.

Following the TN Comptroller's report and advocacy by TCBA, the state invested an additional $30 million in HCBS to expand Choices Group 3 and OPTIONS programs.

In October 2023, TCBA leadership met with Gov. Lee's staff about restructuring aging and disability at the state level. The following week, the state announced plans to move TCAD to DIDD and create a new and improved department. We continued to meet with the administration and legislators, and are pleased to report Gov. Lee signed the Tennessee Disability and Aging Act, legislation that merges DIDD and TCAD, creating a new Department of Disability and Aging (DDA) on April 11, 2024.

Financial exploitation is a very common form of elder abuse. According to the CDC, 1 out of 10 older adults living at home has been a victim of elder abuse (a low estimate based on the number of reports; actual prevalence is approx. 24x greater). In terms of monetary loss, older adults lose a total of $36.5 billion per year to financial exploitation and fraud.

AgeWell keeps Middle Tennesseans informed about financial scams targeting older adults through:
- Regular "Scam of the Month" email blasts
- Scam prevention brochures for older adults and caregivers, available in English and Spanish
- Presentations to older adults across middle Tennessee about how to identify and avoid scams

AgeWell also convenes the Middle TN Elder Watch to share information and foster collaboration among agencies working to prevent elder abuse. Member organizations also work together to educate the public and raise awareness about elder abuse and scams.

CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments

As more than 10,000 baby boomers turn 65 every day and over 42 million Americans provide care for aging loved ones, there are growing demands on nonprofits including ours. AgeWell is at a critical juncture of building infrastructure through staffing, volunteer engagement and technology upgrades. The Executive Director and the Board have been working together to strengthen infrastructure and raise funds so that AgeWell can support more older adults and caregivers and drive collaborative solutions for unmet needs. After participating in CNM's Innovation Catalyst program, we launched a new social enterprise - Eldercare Coach - to support employers and working caregivers. While many employers recognize the need for childcare, many aren't aware of how many employees are juggling work and eldercare. AgeWell encourages employers and congregations to explore partnering with AgeWell to improve education and support for family caregivers.

Another challenge is that many older adults are struggling to live on fixed incomes and they call AgeWell for help. That's why we're launching a new collaborative program called RESET - Raising Economic Security to Enjoy Thriving. We want to make it easier for older adults to access financial counseling, benefit enrollment assistance and referral to supplemental income opportunities. This collective impact initiative needs additional investment to fund AgeWell's backbone role, our partners providing services and program marketing.

We invite you to support our work in launching these solutions. In the words of Helen Keller, 'Alone we can do so little. Together, we can do so much.'
