CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments

As is only proper for an animal sanctuary, the bulk of the assets of Shepherd's Green must go towards direct animal rescue and care. However, in an attempt to educate the public and assist those private citizens with pet pigs, monies have been set aside to fund the Outreach and Assistance Program. The Problem: The problem is overpopulation of potbellied pigs, animals brought into the US in late 1980's as 'pets'. Unsuited for that role and being prey animals, they breed rapidly and are sold or given away to people who abuse, neglect and torture them. Used for dog fighting bait and to test gun accuracy on shooting preserves, and tied up to broil (literally) in the sun or freeze in the cold. There are no abuses not inflicted on these potbellied pigs. The American Sanctuary Association has declared the US to be in the throes of the worst abuse population ever in our history. We were on the board of the first sanctuary for these animals and have taken in thousands over the past 27 years. It's the worst we have seen. The use of wild animals (pot bellied pigs are captive bred wildlife) is obscene and panders to the worst of human desires to own and control the destiny of those weaker. The living being is not an object; he thinks, he wants, he laughs, he fears, he grieves. Goal: Reduce the population through advocacy and the support of advocacy through our knowledge and marketing . Provide help for existing animals wherever we find them, and give sanctuary for all that we can. Strategies: We belong to the American Sanctuary Association, an accrediting organization for sanctuaries sheltering all manner of animals, wild to exotic to domestic farm animals. We are one of only two nationally that are exclusively pig sanctuaries. Working with the support of the ASA sanctuaries can help us lever the visibility to the right places for legal and regulatory action to follow. Its not just about animal welfare; we must come out from under our blanket and see that the sharing of responsibility can result in a better world for all
