Description
In the Third Beat: Improv for Older Adults program, participation ranges from one time drop-in improv workshops to 6 week improv classes. The curriculum for the Third Beat program focuses on exercises that are inclusive of all abilities and celebrates storytelling and connection. All participants are older/aging/senior citizens and this program partners with organizations like Fifty Forward and Metro Parks senior centers. A new upcoming program in 2024 is a partnership with Fifty Forward in which Unscripted teaching artists mentor previous program participants to start and lead their own improv performance troupes.
The Third Beat Program won the CNM Salute to Excellence "New Generations" award in 2022.

The curriculum focuses on a strengths based mindset, community building and connection, and includes exercises and games inclusive of all abilities (physical, verbal, neurological.) Most participants learn how to improvise and practice improv skills in a monthly or weekly ongoing class, and plans for 2024 includes a "side by side" improv show where disabled improvisers perform alongside typical improvisers. Current and past program partners include Friends Life, Progress, Inc and Backlight Productions.

The Improv Club is a burgeoning ensemble with a core of 10 emerging BIPOC improvisers. This group formed in late spring 2023 by way of an Unscripted project in North Nashville, through a partnership with J.U.M.P (Jefferson United Merchant Partnership.) The Improv Club hosts monthly improv meetups which are free and open to the public, led by BIPOC improvisers and hosted at community businesses and meeting spaces in BIPOC communities. Each meetup allows participants to learn and practice improv exercises, as well as explore improv style specifically developed by BIPOC artists (rather than the forms and style developed throughout the historically white art form of improv.) This program is the culmination of a several year initiative to invest in the North Nashville community, which was our organizational priority due to its proximity to our partner theater and only improv theater in Nashville: Third Coast Comedy Club.

The program was developed by Unscripted improvisers and teachers in partnership with licensed therapists to practice improv through a therapeutic lens. | In our strategic planning session, the board of directors, along with community volunteers and program participants, named Diversity and Inclusivity as our top priority throughout all governance, funding opportunities, community partnerships, and programming. With the development of a Diversity and Inclusion committee, we have many program initiatives which focus on this priority, and are excited to embark on these , both in the short and long term timelines. |
