Description
The most important component to our program is also our only unquantifiable measure of the Dismas program. From the first day a resident joins the Dismas Family, we overly explain the culture of support we offer and detail the importance of adopting the family-like atmosphere promoted at Dismas. This mentality is encouraged by the volunteers recruited to help administer direct service program elements. In exit interviews with former residents, the ability to provide a family-like structure is the single most vital aspect of programming that helped them successfully transition back into society. We introduce every resident to a network of volunteers and staff members whose sole purpose is to help them succeed.
Long-term Success
Life Skills residents are assigned a case manager who advises them on workforce readiness and coaches them on reentry barriers. Life Skills classes include opening a bank account, obtaining identification, completing resumes, technology skills, financial literacy, WeGo public transportation class, and healthcare education classes.

CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments
Dismas House is housing for returning citizens with reentry program and we accept application from Tennessee state prisons and county jails. We have served this population for over 49 years! The national prison population is estimated to be over 2.2 million with a recidivism rate of 50%. Society is faced with a crisis regarding mass incarceration and post release services have not proved effective in reducing recidivism rates. A large portion of those released from incarceration return to extreme poverty, homelessness or an unhealthy living environment. Former offenders that do not have a positive support system, a safe living environment, or financial means are often faced with the decision to re-offend for survival - resulting in 1 of 2 individuals released from incarceration returning to within 3 years. Our goal is that less that 10% of our program granuates will return to prison in three years and we are on track to meet this goal. That level of success, is directly attributed to our holistic program model, family atmosphere, and the personalized attention we provide each resident at Dismas. |
