Global Sanctuary for Elephants
Programs
Description
ESB is located on a vast, lush 2,800 acre property in the Mato Grosso region of Brazil. We are working diligently to build the necessary habitats for each species and gender to enable us to receive the elephants on our waitlist and others in dire need of sanctuary. Because of Brazil's central location, ESB is able to provide sanctuary to elephants from surrounding countries in South America, offering solace to elephants throughout the continent. Its optimal temperature means the elephants will be able to spend their time outside year-round. Every elephant is different, but we have seen, first-hand, the one thing that is constant -- they all blossom beautifully as they rediscover what it means to be an elephant and are allowed the time and space to figure out who they are.

Description
Our goal is to educate a global audience about the need for safe spaces that replicate captive elephants' natural habitats, where they are free to live as elephants with minimal human interference. We work with other nonprofit organizations on the creation of sanctuaries, based on space and autonomy, in much-needed areas of the world, and on progressive legislation for elephants. We have provided expert testimony and interviews on the benefits of sanctuary for elephants and the negative impacts of captivity, as well as video analysis and diagnostics of captive elephants, their health, body conditions, and overall well-being.

CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments
The biggest challenge this year has been knowing all of the elephants who we could help if we had facilities built, but not being able to do so. It is challenging to visit an elephant in a terrible situation, have them offer you their elephant and have to say you can't take them at this time. It's even more heartbreaking having to walk away. GSE is in their infancy and building up a following can be a struggle, but we are getting there. We are building upon a great support team that is fiercely motivated to help us rescue all of the elephants that are waiting for someone to offer them a better life. This year we also plan on expanding our staff, to allow more time to be dedicated to donor relations and progressive fundraising ideas. There is already a fantastic team on-site at Elephant Sanctuary Brazil. Additional funding would mean we could also build on this team and expedite development of our next phase. Building up a new organization is always a struggle, but our support base is strong and extremely dedicated, and we are confident that we will continue to grow in a way that allows us to help elephants waiting throughout South America. |
