Mission

We bridge the gaps between support, resources, and programs, so autistic individuals are empowered to recognize their potential and discover the meaningful connections needed to realize their goals.

Background

Founded in 1996, AutismTN (Autism Tennessee) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting and empowering the autism community in Middle Tennessee. Our programs serve Autistic people of all ages, along with their support networks, to foster understanding, inclusion, and respect for the unique needs and talents of our community.

Our programs address a wide range of needs, from providing resources and education to creating safe, inclusive spaces for social connection. The AutismTN HELPline, a cornerstone of our organization, serves as a lifeline to those seeking guidance, information, and support. Through HELPline, our trained advocates offer one-on-one assistance to help callers navigate autism diagnosis, access services, and connect to critical community resources.

In response to a growing need for adult support, AutismTN has expanded its programs to include services tailored specifically for adults on the autism spectrum. These offerings include social networking groups like Spectrum Connection for LGBTQIA+ adults, Unveiling Autistic Identities (UAI), and Connect, which provide supportive environments for socializing, learning, and self-advocacy. We're also proud to offer EmployME, a program aimed at helping adults on the spectrum gain the skills and confidence needed for meaningful employment.

AutismTN is deeply committed to education and awareness. We provide training and workshops for the community, helping them gain the knowledge and tools needed to interact effectively and respectfully with the autism community. Through our Building Bridges training, we empower local preschools and childcare centers to become more neuro-welcoming, creating a stronger, safer community for all.

AutismTN believes in the power of community. Our family social networking groups, such as Familias Especiales Latinas for Spanish-speaking families and the Arabic-speaking family network, help connect individuals and families across cultural lines. We host events that foster fun, safe environments for families to connect, celebrate, and build lifelong relationships, such as our annual Game Day and Pajama Walk & 5K. These events offer a chance for community engagement and highlight the strengths and diversity of our community.

AutismTN relies on generous donors and partners to fulfill its mission. Together, we work toward a more inclusive world where Autistic people and their families feel supported, valued, and understood.

Impact

This year, AutismTN reached several significant milestones, advancing our mission and deepening our impact on the Autistic community in Middle Tennessee.

In a major step forward, AutismTN hired its first Autistic Adult Program Director last October and, this year, welcomed its first Autistic Community Outreach Manager. These additions have increased our staff composition to 42% Autistic, underscoring our commitment to "bridging the gaps" with a team inclusive of both Autistic individuals and neurodiverse family members.

We also achieved recognition as an affiliate of the national Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN), a nonprofit organization led by Autistic individuals. ASAN is a grassroots disability rights organization dedicated to Autistic inclusion in policy-making and advocacy for laws and policies that address our community's needs. Becoming an ASAN affiliate, which requires Autistic leadership within the organization, reflects AutismTN's commitment to amplifying Autistic voices and changing public perceptions of autism through empowerment and advocacy.

Additionally, AutismTN received a prestigious NEXT for AUTISM grant, a highly competitive national award supporting Autistic-led and community-based projects. Out of hundreds of applicants, AutismTN was one of only six Autistic-led projects selected. This grant funds monthly social events for our Autistic Self-Advocate Community Groups, providing affirming spaces where Autistic adults can connect and support one another. Through this grantee network, we have also joined a nationwide coalition of autism advocacy organizations, enabling us to share ideas, resources, and best practices with other leaders in the field, which strengthens our programs and broadens our reach.

These achievements address core challenges for Autistic adults, including social isolation, Autistic burnout, and overall well-being. The impact of these initiatives is evident in the growth of our community groups and the feedback we receive from participants: "I appreciate having this space for Autistic adults SO MUCH." "Joining the group and obtaining more stable, fulfilling, full-time employment are two factors that turned my life around for the better." Another participant shared, "I feel like I belong. I learn so much from the experiences of other Autistic folks," capturing the essential role of these spaces in fostering a sense of belonging and shared learning.

The success of our adult programs has inspired new support from the City of Nashville, allowing us to expand our proven strategies and partnerships to create monthly social opportunities and outings for Autistic teens.

In addition, our partnership with Vanderbilt University established our new Drive to Thrive program, while our Building Bridges program is helping neurodiverse families access inclusive childcare facilities participating in our program.

As we look ahead, AutismTN is excited to advance transformative work that directly responds to critical unmet needs within the Autistic community in Middle Tennessee. The challenges we address stem from systemic barriers that impact access to employment, stable housing, community integration, and crucially, personal autonomy. Autistic people often face significant hurdles due to prevailing misconceptions about autism, and our programs aim to replace deficit-based narratives with neuro-affirming approaches that support Autistic people in all aspects of life. We look forward to continuing to co-build a Neuro-Affirming Community of Practice that champions inclusivity and respect across all areas of life in Middle Tennessee.
