Mission

The Millennium Repertory Company strives to provide quality theatrical entertainment, to promote appreciation for all the arts through performance, stagecraft, dance, music, and educational opportunities, and to make performance possibilities available to the adults and children of our community.

Background

Millennium Repertory Company (MRC) began providing community theatre at the Manchester Arts Center (MAC) in Manchester, Tennessee in 1996. As many as six performances of four productions were produced annually the first few years to audiences ranging in size from 20 to 80 per performance. In 1998, the Teen Actors Guild (TAG) was formed by MRC members to provide theatre activities, workshops, and performances specifically for ages 13 to 19. In 2000, MRC added the Wee Actors Guild (WAG) to its programs, focusing on preteens. Since 2013, the organization has produced six performances of a minimum of eight productions annually, including two TAG shows and one WAG show per year, to audiences of 50 to 180 per performance. In 2014, MRC added its Home School Theatre Enrichment Program (HSTEP) for home school students age 10 to 17. The HSTEP group has grown from 11 participants to more than 40 and performs 6 to 8 presentations of two productions per year for local elementary schools.

Impact

Millennium's youth programs continue their growth. Our Wee Actors Guild (ages 12 and under) has enthusiastic and committed leadership, and we plan to expand our free offerings for teens (monthly theatre workshops and open-mic coffeehouses) during the next year. Performances for local elementary school classes by our Home School Theatre Enrichment Program (HSTEP), which produces two one-hour shows per year, has increased from 4 per semester to 9 and has expanded from 30 home school participants per production to 40 each. Our eight annual main stage productions continue to bring both classics and less-well known works to an area starved for live performance and artistic opportunity.

Needs

Our volunteers are our greatest strength, but we always need more helping hands, especially directors for children's programs, asset managers, and craftspeople who make sets, costumes, and properties for our performances. The Manchester Arts Center is an attractive venue for performances; however, the demand for programs is constricted because of limited space for rehearsal. The building has some unfinished areas that need walls to enable multiple activities to take place simultaneously. Also, we need more storage room for costumes, properties, and building materials. Our sound system is antiquated and need upgrading, and because 5 out of 8 shows we produce are musicals, we have a high demand for quality wireless microphones. These microphones are fragile and costly, and they must be replaced occasionally.
