Mission

To collect, preserve, interpret, and share the creativity and ingenuity of the human spirit for audiences today and into the future.

Background

A portion of the Museum is housed in the 1898 building, which was originally a post office and customs house. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. With its charter in 1983, the people of Clarksville and Montgomery County entrusted this Museum with the collection, preservation and interpretation of this community's history and culture. From its inception, the Museum has been committed to serving this community. This commitment is reflected through services such as educational programs, breathtaking exhibits and reduced admission days. The Customs House Museum & Cultural Center has always been and will continue to be dedicated to the enhancement of the quality of life in our community.

Impact

Recent accomplishments include the reopening of a fully renovated children's exhibit. The $500,000 was sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Clarksville, the Clarksville-Montgomery County Community Health Foundation and other community organizations. In 2021, the Museum opened "Start Your Engines! A Celebration of Racing in Montgomery County," a blockbuster exhibit that spanned multiple galleries and was up for half the year. A three-part documentary was produced in tandem for the show, merchandise including t-shirts and a magazine were created and over 7 full-size race cars and dragsters were on display. Over the course of the past two years, the Museum has received multiple industry rewards from organizations such as the Tennessee Association of Museums, Southeastern Museum Conference and the Museum Store Association highlighting the amazing work staff has completed in order to share the Musuem's mission with our community in terms of engaging programs, thoughtful promotions and fascinating exhibits. The Museum also reached over 1,000 members in 2021, and our goal is to reach 2,000 by the end of 2022.

Needs

Our needs are as follows: 1. Our facility needs additional space to house our growing collections within suitable conditions to conserve and preserve our artifacts.
2. Additional staffing is needed to sufficiently cover our growing audience's needs and programming efforts.
3. Funding is needed to renovate infrastructure in our gallery spaces.
4. Increased volunteer crew to help cover tasks.
