Mission

To improve lives by promoting research, awareness and support for children's neurological diseases.

Background

Laurian and John Scott created Thisbe and Noah after their 2 ? year old daughter, Thisbe, died of a neurological disease called BVVL and in the hopes of saving Noah, Thisbe's baby brother, who was also diagnosed with BVVL. No gene was known for BVVL and with no gene, there was no hope. Laurian and John were determined to help find the gene and that is exactly what they did. In the end, they were not able to save Noah. However, a mission was created to help those families fighting similar pediatric neurological diseases and to fill the holes in terms of research, awareness and support. Pediatric neurological diseases are considered rare. However, as a whole, "rare" diseases afflict more than 35 million people in the United States alone. Many patients suffering from pediatric neurological diseases do not have the research benefits and funding given to larger groups. They do not have a sense of community or hope. They are invisible to many. Thisbe and Noah wants to help give a voice to those children suffering from these rare diseases and to offer programs of support to their families.

Impact

We were given space at the Nashville Zoo to build an all-inclusive playground for children with all types of abilities and disabilities. This playground is called Thisbe & Noah's Promise Park. We give away 100 Zoo Membership Grants per year to families who have a child(ren) with a disability. Through Promise Park, we are creating community around disability through our Zoo Membership Grant program and gatherings for these grant recipients.

We continue our Family Conference Grant program and it is growing each year. This program offers travel grants for families within our mission to attend support conferences. These support conferences exist to allow families and caregivers the opportunity to create community around their child's disease that can result in enhanced clinical care and new research directions. Family conferences offer families the opportunity to learn, share and inspire one another while also furthering research.

Goals: To promote acceptance and understanding of disability. To provide hope to families affected by pediatric neurological diseases. To increase awareness through the use of social media, marketing and fundraisers.
