Vanderbilt University is a center for scholarly research, informed and creative teaching, and service to the community and society at large. Vanderbilt will uphold the highest standards and be a leader in the: * quest for new knowledge through scholarship, * dissemination of knowledge through teaching and outreach, * creative experimentation of ideas and concepts.

Background

Cornelius Vanderbilt had a vision of a place that would "contribute to strengthening the ties that should exist between all sections of our common country" when he gave $1 million to create a university in 1873. Today that vision has been realized in Vanderbilt, an internationally recognized research university in Nashville, Tennessee, with strong partnerships among its 10 schools, neighboring institutions and the community.Vanderbilt offers undergraduate programs in the liberal arts and sciences, engineering, music, education and human development, as well as a full range of graduate and professional degrees. The combination of cutting-edge research, liberal arts education, nationally recognized schools of law, business, medicine, nursing and divinity, and one of the nation's top-ranked graduate schools of education creates an invigorating atmosphere where students tailor their education to meet their goals and researchers collaborate to address the complex questions affecting our health, culture and society.Vanderbilt provides a gateway to greatness, drawing the brightest students from across the nation and around the world. Vanderbilt alumni can be found in Congress, on the judicial bench, in the pulpit, leading corporations, conducting innovative medical research, serving in their communities, and playing in the NFL, major league baseball, the PGA and LPGA.Vanderbilt, an independent, privately supported university, and the separate, nonprofit Vanderbilt University Medical Center share a respected name and enjoy close collaboration through education and research. Together, the number of people employed by these two organizations exceeds that of the largest private employer in the Middle Tennessee region.

CEO Statement

My name is Daniel Diermeier and I am delighted to join Vanderbilt today as the university's ninth chancellor. ... This is a time filled with potential as students return to the campus in fall under the safeguards we recently announced. Above all, I look forward to working with all of you to embark on Vanderbilt's next chapter of excellence. New beginnings are often filled with optimism. But this is especially true when they are rooted in a tradition of achievement, a common purpose and the strong values and culture that have led Vanderbilt to where we are today. I have all of you to thank for that. When I originally envisioned my first day in this position, I could not have imagined that the world would be in the grip of a global pandemic while simultaneously witnessing a profound and powerful call for racial justice. And yet, despite these profound challenges, I cannot think of a better time to step into this role, and for all of us to come together to advance Vanderbilt's mission--to share our values, our discoveries, our wisdom, our humanity when society needs them most. ... Together, we will not only advance our university's mission, but also expand it-finding new questions to answer, exploring novel ways to resolve social ills, discovering pathways that will save or improve lives. We will continue in Vanderbilt's invigorating spirit of collaboration, whether developing a possible vaccine, or working to stamp out racial injustice."
-Daniel Diermeier, 9th Chancellor of Vanderbilt University

Board Chair Statement

"Taken as a whole, the [Vanderbilt University] Academic Strategic Plan describes a thoughtful, multipart system designed to produce well-educated men and women. Now, we just have to go raise the funds to fully implement everything in this plan. That's next on our list of goals." Bruce Evans, Vanderbilt University Board of Trust Chairman
