Mission

TennGreen Land Conservancy conserves land where people and nature can thrive. TennGreen envisions large, connected natural areas that support diversity of life, inspire appreciation of nature, and spark action to protect the water we drink, the air we breathe, and the land that sustains us all.

Background

Since 1998, TennGreen Land Conservancy (formerly the Tennessee Parks & Greenways Foundation) has led the charge to protect the ecologically-rich, beautiful, and historically-significant treasures that make Tennessee unique. Thanks to fearless leaders, dedicated partners, and passionate supporters, we've protected tens of thousands of acres of our state's wetlands, grasslands, mountains, forests, and waterways.

Founded by Kathleen Williams, TennGreen was established as the result of a merger between the Tennessee Greenways Program of The Conservation Fund and The Tennessee State Parks Foundation.

Inspired by the book Greenways for America by Charles Little, Kathleen started TennGreen with a vision to create an interconnected greenway system (large corridors of conserved land) to protect our natural treasures, waters, and wildlife. State parks would be destinations in this network: to get Tennesseans and tourists outside to explore nature and appreciate its beauty.

Throughout the years, Kathleen's bold vision, impressive successes, and her abiding love for our state attracted kindred spirits-Gary Myers, John Sheahan, Bill Bruce, Dr. Charles Womack, Mack Prichard, Mary Lynn Dobson, Bob Brown, John Noel, Penny Brooks, Shirley Caldwell-Patterson, Dr. Stephen Stedman, and so many more!

Today, TennGreen Land Conservancy continues to work strategically and collaboratively to conserve land where people and nature can thrive.

Impact

Through sound science and partnerships, TennGreen Land Conservancy identifies and conserves land across Tennessee for wildlife corridors, critical habitat, and public benefit. TennGreen protects, cares for, and connects people with Tennessee's natural world by providing meaningful outdoor experiences, establishing conservation easements, supporting restoration efforts, and acquiring (or assisting in the acquisition of) privately-held land.

Tennessee is known for its extraordinary beauty from the mighty Mississippi to the Great Smoky Mountains. Our rich forests, farms, and wetlands are not only our home but also home to a vast diversity of fish and wildlife. Tennessee is experiencing extreme human development pressure, and every missed opportunity to protect our unique lands is an irreversible loss to our future. We must act swiftly and smartly to protect the places that provide us all well-being and an unrivaled quality of life.

OUR PRIORITY AREAS:
-Large connected natural areas
-Areas of critical habitat
-Wetlands and lands along rivers and streams
-Land for public recreation and open space

Needs

TennGreen Land Conservancy is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that relies entirely on the support of our generous community to conserve our home and heritage. Your financial gift ensures that we can swiftly protect our vulnerable lands and waters as important conservation opportunities arise. TennGreen also accepts support for its Revolving Land Fund, which is a revolving fund that assists with unexpected purchases of conservation-worthy land.

CEO Statement

For over twenty years, TennGreen Land Conservancy has been committed to protecting the best of our natural world. As the oldest statewide land conservancy in Tennessee, our vast experience with land conservation projects has proven time and again that collaboration is the key to success. We continually seek partnership opportunities with private landowners, local municipalities, and state and federal agencies to conserve Tennessee's rich natural heritage by creating parks, establishing wildlife corridors, and expanding existing protected public lands. By creating these networks of parks and conserved forests and waterways, we are effectively protecting the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the land that sustains us all. When practical, based on a site's ecological sensitivity, our land conservation initiatives are also intended to enhance public access for compatible recreational pursuits and to instill a greater appreciation of nature. We strongly believe that a public in touch with and inspired by nature's intrinsic beauty will forever make its protection a high priority.
