Adopt A Golden Nashville strives to educate the public regarding the importance of monthly heart worm treatment. Heart worms are serious and potentially fatal. Heart worms are foot long worms that live in the heart, lungs, and associated blood vessels of affected pets and can cause lung disease and/or heart failure. The disease is spread by the mosquito, and this also affects indoor pets. Prevention is the best option and should be administered monthly throughout the year. Adopt A Golden Nashville routinely provides heart worm prevention information at our events and on our social media accounts. Each new adopter is advised of the importance of placing a dog on monthly prevention, including the winter months. Approximately forty percent of the dogs we take into our program are heart worm positive. Treatment takes several months and can costs can surpass $1000 per dog.
