Description
Once an animal is accepted into the program, it is vaccinated, dewormed and given a dose of flea and tick preventative. If any health issues are seen, they are sent to one of our Veterinarians for evaluation and treatment. Each animal is given time in its foster home to adjust and let their true personality shine. They are tested around other animals and children if possible. This allows the foster parent to tell potential adopters a lot of things about an animal that would not be apparent in a shelter. Puppies and kittens are held for 30 days so that they can receive their necessary vaccinations and grow stronger and healthier before going to their new homes. Once the animals are strong and healthy enough, we send them to our Veterinarian for a full exam, spay and neuter, heartworm or feline leukemia/fiv test, rabies vaccine, fecal and microchip. Any issues found during this time are treated. We screen potential adopters, and search for the very best home for each animal.

Description
The AARF Freedom Ride Rescue Transport Program was started in 2012 as a result of continuous overcrowding at our local animal shelters. We realized years ago that we could not simply rescue our way out of the problem that existed - we are too small and there were just too many animals still being euthanized. We started seeking out partnerships with rescues and shelters in the north who lived by the same beliefs as our organization does. After screening these organizations, partnerships were made and we began transporting animals directly from our local shelters to them via personal vehicles and mini-vans. The program grew rapidly as we proved that by providing these partner shelters with a variety of breed mixes that they were lacking, their adoption rates improved dramatically - even for some of the Pit Bulls who had been sitting in their shelters for years! We knew we needed a bigger vehicle and we were provided with a grant to purchase our first rescue van in June of 2012.

CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments

We are pleased to report that our programs are working! We are saving lives and allowing our local animal shelters to eliminate the senseless killing of adoptable animals. We are thrilled to partner with the most caring and amazing people in our community to make this happen. Rescue is a team effort, and I must say that we have the most outstanding team! From our dedicated volunteers, to the overworked and underpaid animal shelter directors and employees, to the donors who make all of this possible - our team is great! We continue to recruit additional volunteers, foster homes, transport drivers and partner shelters to ensure that we stay focused on our mission. The foundation of our organization is the understanding that spay and neuter is the answer to the overpopulation problem that exists today, and our ultimate goal is to no longer be needed. But until that time comes, we will continue to work hard to give each homeless animal a chance to live the life it has been given, and continue to educate the public on the need for spay and neuter.
