Description
Photovoice is a method that puts cameras in the hands of underrepresented individuals and groups to help them tell their stories visually. We lead photovoice projects specifically for disability focused groups to promote self-expression, empowerment, and advocacy. Participants take part in a variety of activities to learn the many features of digital cameras and multiple photography techniques to share their thoughts and experiences through photographs. A gallery exhibit serves as the culminating experience of the project, as the students display their photographs that represent their interests, strengths, and the people, places, and things that are most important to them, while defining them as individuals. This experience amplifies the participants' voices and illustrates the power of self-expression. Photography is an impactful way to promote learning, build confidence, spark creativity, develop social skills, encourage dialogue, and promote advocacy for people with disabilities.

Description
AbleVoices in-person Photography Club is a program for young adults and older (14+) living in Middle Tennessee with and without disabilities (peer mentors). During the summer months, the group will meet each week at a difference scenic location, learn new photography skills, have lunch together and socialize. Our outings have included venues such as the Nashville Zoo, Centennial Park and the Parthenon Museum, Radnor Lake, BiCentennial Mall State Park and the Nashville Farmer's Market, Downtown Franklin, Cumberland Park and the Nashville Riverfront, Deerwood Arboretum, and more. We cap off our summer club with a public exhibit and opening reception where the photographers' family, friends, and the community can celebrate their work. In the Fall, Winter, and Spring months we will have monthly outings. In addition, we also offer an AbleVoices virtual photography club throughout the year for individuals who cannot meet in person.

Description
AbleVoices offers professional photography services to organizations that serve the disability community as well as to self-advocates and families of individuals with disabilities. We also develop professional projects to create bodies of work that explore themes of disability and diversity in our community. An important part of this program is that AbleVoices participants have work-based opportunities to assist during the professional shoots. They prepare for assisting professional photographers by taking AbleVoices trainings that specifically teach these skills.
