FOSL started planning for this back at their June Board meeting along with behind the scenes help from Ginger Graves, SPL Branch Librarian and Smyrna Public Library Staff The authors who participated and the people from the area who attended expressed many times today how much they enjoyed the event and thanked FOSL for holding this event. Daniel Epright, Murfreesboro Post, was in attendance taking pictures and interviewing people throughout the day at the event. Thank you Dan! Also, FOSL would like to thank Sylvanye "Sam" Roh for creating and donating the lovely name plates for all the authors who participated at this year's fair! The nameplates were beautiful! The fair started with a Panel Discussion in the SPL Program Room with 11 of our 17 authors participating. Thanks

Smyrna Public Library's Summer Reading Program provides the youth in our community the opportunity to practice their reading skills during summer vacation, as well as fostering the joy of reading. For a period of eight or more weeks, children, teens, and their families can participate in literacy-enhancing programs such as storytelling, puppet shows, music, and creative arts and crafts; all which are free. To add to the fun and to create a sense of challenge, incentives, door prizes, and an end-of-event celebration are provided for all ages. These are the items that we help provide. In 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, Friends of Smyrna Library sponsored a Story Book Walk that allowed library visitors to enjoy reading a book each week posted on a short walking trail loop around the library.

Program Successes
In 2020, the library had 700 participants reading 424,567 minutes and had a 86.6% completion rate. The data from project outcome showed that the summer reading program received an average score of 4.4 out of a possible 5 on the four areas surveyed: Increase of knowledge-4.2, Increase confidence-4.2, New skills required-4.2 and library awareness of resources-4.0. Many parents commented on the reading recommendations provided by the staff, the book bundles, and the Quest Kits provided for children
Note: *The Summer Reading program was impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Walter King Hoover was a long-time Smyrna resident and historian. He was active in the community and supported both the Smyrna Public Library and Friends of the Library. He always wanted to see more adult-oriented programming at the library. The Friends of the Library agreed to sponsor this program, and on January 13, 2003 the first annual winter reading program was offered and named in Mr. Hoover's honor. Our group donates money for incentives, programs, door prizes, and decorations.

Participants ages 14 and up signup for the six week program. This year 2020 we had 102 participants and 68 of these completed the program.
