Description
In 2021, the Mt. Olive Cemetery Historical Preservation Society (MOCHPS) led an effort in obtaining $45,000 from the Clarksville Public Art Commission for the building of a United States Colored Troops monument, which will be unveiled at the Fort Defiance Civil War Park & Interpretive Center in June of 2022, to celebrate the Juneteenth holiday. In addition to the funding received from the Clarksville government, members of the MOCHPS have pledged an additional $30,000, since the total price of the monument is at least $73,000.

Long-term Success
For those who visit the United States Colored Troops (USCT) monument at the Fort Defiance Civil War Park and Interpretive Center, nearly all (e.g., 90%) of individuals will understand the influence and contributions of the USCT and be able to reflect on their thoughts and feelings related to these brave and courageous freedom fighters. It is the goal of the MOCHPS that all visitors of the USCT monument understand and reflect on the words of President Abraham Lincoln, spoken in 1865, when he said, "Without the military help of the Black freedmen, the war against the South could not have been won."
