TNSTEP provides special education assistance to families and caregivers of children and youth disabilities including:
•Training on IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) and 504 rights
•Equipping families and youth to be effective advocates through IEP and 504 review and strategy planning
•Assistance in writing measurable goals and using data to make informed decisions to ensure children and youth receive equal access to high-quality education
•Information on other programs and resources available to children and youth with disabilities

Our services are designed to help families and youth build skills to become effective participants in meetings where decisions are being made related to special education and equal access to an appropriate education. Description
STEP Up To The Plate (SUTP) Youth Council was launched to provide youth with disabilities the opportunity to develop their leadership and advocacy skills and begin preparing for the transition from high school to adulthood. Through youth & mentor-led growth activities, transition mentorship, and advocacy projects, council members obtain invaluable skills, confidence, knowledge, and resume material. Alumni put those tools to use by speaking at SUTP recruitment and TNSTEP Youth Tour events.

In 2023, the TNSTEP Youth Tour visited one school district from each region of the state, where mentors and council members spoke with students receiving IEPs and 504 Plans about self-advocacy, learning to become more independent, planning for life after high school, the support services TNSTEP provides to youth with disabilities at no cost, and @tnstepyouth, the SUTP online community (Facebook and Instagram) that offers youth-focused content on transition planning and opportunities.
