Description
We've all heard "You have the right to an attorney." The right to an attorney is only in criminal matters. If you're faced with a civil legal matter, you don't have that right. That's when Legal Aid services become vital for those struggling to make ends meet. A Legal Aid attorney can change the course of someone's life. Someone facing eviction, dealing with employment issues, needing safety from an abusive relationship are civil legal matters that can drastically impact the life of a family. LAS is committed to the principle that all residents are due equal representation under the law & to providing the best resources available. Services provided are holistic; not simply focusing on a single issue, but the totality of the circumstances. All services are free. LAS's work focuses on family and domestic violence; health, income and education; housing; consumer/finance; & employment. LAS serves 48 of the 95 counties in the state in 8 offices located in urban, suburban and rural areas.

CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments

As Legal Aid Society celebrates 50 years of service to those in need, we look forward to another 50 years of service. Legal Aid Society's programs have a national reputation for excellence. With a 4.5 year, $3.2 million grant, we've expanded services to victims of domestic and sexual violence as well as launched an immigrant legal clinic for victims of domestic violence. Legal Aid is in the midst of our Strategic Planning process for 2019 - 2022 and is increasing our social media presence to educate and inform our community and followers. In 2018, Legal Aid attorneys took a major case to federal court and established a healthcare precedent as well as took a major case to the Court of Appeals and established a precedent in consumer matters. Legal Aid Society recognizes the importance of coordinated services and strategies when addressing a community's problems. Our staff are involved in over 100 collaborations, coalitions, task forces, and committees, often serving in leadership roles. We strive to expand our capacity through the contribution of time and talent by hundreds of pro bono attorneys and other volunteers each year.
