Description
In alignment with an equity and justice approach to our work, which centers those affected by harmful systems and recognizes the decision-making power of marginalized communities to lead and create solutions, AWAKE has launched an annual student advisory board. We believe this leadership opportunity for high school students enables us to serve Tennessee's young people more effectively.

The board is made up of high school students in the Nashville area who have been selected based on an application and interview process. The final cohort meets monthly to advise on the educational and legislative goals of the organization, discuss issues impacting youth in our state with AWAKE leadership and guest speakers, learn important skills related to leadership in advocacy work, and complete a self-determined advocacy project related to a relevant issue area.

Description
The I Am an Advocate program uses a proprietary, evidence-based curriculum to equip youth with the tools to be advocates for themselves and change-makers in their communities. The curriculum aims to support participants in the development of interpersonal and self-care skills, sociopolitical consciousness, understandings of leadership, and communication and action planning skills essential to advocacy work. We created this curriculum, in partnership with a Curriculum Specialist, based on the sociopolitical context that youth and their communities live in while also centering the expertise of youth. The six sessions are organized into three parts: self-care and self-advocacy, historical leadership, and taking action.

AWAKE facilitates this program in collaboration with community nonprofit partners. We provide the curriculum, trained facilitators, volunteers, and program materials to the populations that our nonprofit partners serve, all at no cost to our partners.

Long-term Success
Societal Change: Individuals and families are made stronger as a result of program graduates advocating for themselves and others. Consequently, gender-based violence and inequality is diminished or prevented for the program graduates and the groups they advocate for within their communities. The contribution of our program can be recognized and measured at the societal level with indirect indicators that represent the state of gender-based violence, domestic violence, child exploitation, and civic activity of youth within Tennessee, for example.

Increased Capacity: Administering consistent, quality curriculum for direct service partner organizations across the state will, as a result, increase partner capacity to serve more individuals thus increasing the health, safety, and wellness of more women and kids in Tennessee.
Program Success Monitored By
AWAKE has a multi-step evaluation process for our education program. Prior to the start of the sessions, we have participants fill out a demographic survey so that we can monitor who exactly we are serving and ensure accurate representation. We give the students a pre/post program questionnaire with which to evaluate if students grew in their understanding and implementation of key concepts and objectives. During our last program session we also give students an evaluation form to monitor if we need to change or improve any aspect of our content, activities, or teaching. Importantly, we have recently included the net promoter score (NPS) question on these evaluation forms in order to have a recognizable and widely-known management tool to communicate externally and use for our internal growth orientation. The NPS tool will enable us to assess programmatic satisfaction of both participants and partner organizations.

CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments

Our programs and initiatives require additional funding in order to reach more underserved children and survivors of human trafficking. As we expand our programs across the state through coalition building and community partnerships, we plan to recruit more volunteers and will need more supplies and resources.
