Description
In 2008, the Friends of Bowie Nature Park published the book, Bowieland, a history of the Bowie family, by FBNP founder Eileen Brogan. The book documents the ecologically-minded family's efforts in the terracing of land and the planting of thousands of trees--efforts which led eventually to the founding of Bowie Nature Park following the death of Dr. Evangeline Bowie in 1992. We maintain a Bowie history display in the Bowie Park Nature Center, and occasionally sponsor displays in other areas in the community. We also sponsor events each year, including an Earth Day/ Arbor Day celebration featuring a plant swap, tree scavenger hunt, and a geocaching Cache In/Trash Out event. We also sponsor a Holiday Fireside Concert in December. Additionally we work with park staff to provide nature education programs for both adults and children.

The Bowie Museum is maintained by the Bowie Historical Committee (BHC), a subcommittee of the Friends of Bowie Nature Park. The museum's permanent exhibit, at the park's nature center, offers a peek into the lives of an unusual and accomplished family and documents their successful efforts to reclaim more than 700 acres of overworked and barren farmland. The BHC has inventoried, documented and safeguarded the extensive collection of Bowie memorabilia with appropriate archival tissue, bags and boxes. In 2018 the BHC formed a partnership with the Williamson County Archives and Museum to house most of these materials. We also continue to prepare exhibits. From time to time, the BHC also sponsors Bowie history displays in various areas in the community.

Our Garden Crew is a group of volunteers who meet twice weekly and who are primarily engaged in the cultivation of flower beds around the nature center and at the park's restrooms. In 2019, we funded the construction of a rain garden near the Bowie Nature Center at a cost of about $1100. The rain garden is expected to help offset a drainage problem in the area. We have also assisted park staff in a number of other efforts, including the control of invasive plant species, and planting native trees.
