CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments

The mission of the Tennessee Youth Symphony is simple: to encourage musical excellence by providing superior musical training and a variety of performance opportunities for young musicians in Middle Tennessee and surrounding areas. The difficulty comes in trying to manage all the competing components necessary to achieve our mission in a manner that is welcoming, nurturing, enjoyable, challenging, and affordable. We work hard as a Board, in tandem with our ensemble conductors, to actively visualize what we want TYS to offer to its students. Our goals for this year are to 1) meet the students where they are musically and stretch them week-by-week to improve themselves and their performance, 2) provide the students with opportunities to socialize, chat, and be kids through our regularly scheduled snack time and a Showcase Night, 3) inspire our children in their musicianship through sectional instruction by professional musicians, 4) share our musical offerings with the Greater Nashville community through free semiannual concerts, and 5) make our program as financially accessible to all interested participants through low tuition rates and scholarships. We will work hard this year to continue to increase those giving amounts in order to provide greater opportunities for our musicians through organizational fundraising and donor and grant solicitation. TYS does not strive solely to be the premier musical youth performance group in the Greater Nashville area. We strive to instill a joy of musical education, preparation, performance, and appreciation in our kids in such a way that they come back to us each week, each semester, and each year just as excited as they were the previous period. Hopefully, we can continue to steer our organization in ways that enrich both our young musicians and the larger Nashville community.
