CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments

The Tennessee Youth Symphony is comprised of highly motivated students from across Middle Tennessee. These students audition for a spot in the orchestra because they are looking for a different type of musical experience; one not often offered in their public, private, or home school programs. Many of these students have never been exposed to music repertoire that we offer. Our weekly rehearsals are positive and encouraging. They not only enhance our musical knowledge and broaden our understanding of different genres, but we work to build a sense of community that is new, broad, and inclusive of all regardless of their instrument preference, school, race, socio-economic status, or gender. We have a widely diverse group of young musicians. Our students love the challenges that TYS poses and they have fun creating music and being together. In addition to the musical and social benefits of the youth symphony, students learn skills that help them as they navigate through life. Vision, creativity, organizational skills, responsibility and commitment are just a few of the attributes gained in this type of ensemble. Students also have the opportunity to exhibit leadership skills within their sections or within the ensemble. Many of our students receive college scholarships as a result of their involvement in their musical ensembles. We have a strong bond with our school community and its music educators.
