Mission

East Nashville Community Action Network (East C.A.N.) is committed to partnering with members of the East Nashville Community in the zip-codes of 37206, 37216 and 37207 (up to Dickerson Pike and Briley Pkwy) to help save the lives of stray, abused and abandoned companion animals and assist in preventing cruelty to animals. We strive to accomplish this mission by facilitating neighbors helping neighbors through providing education, supplies, training and veterinary care (including spay/neuter) to neighbors who seek help with their own animal(s), an animal they have found or an animal-related situation they have concerns about. We utilize our network of resources to place the animals in our program into permanent adoptive homes.

Background

East Nashville Community Action Network (East C.A.N.) was initially founded in 2008 by Elizabeth Chauncey and operated under the umbrella of the Rediscover East nonprofit organization. What started as one neighbor trying to organize the efforts of her fellow animal-loving neighbors on the East Nashville listserv has evolved into a network of local residents and local businesses who donate their time, money and homes to facilitate healing and hope for companion animals in need in East Nashville. East C.A.N. became an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in 2014. East C.A.N. is run solely by volunteers and is funded entirely by donations. We do not operate a physical shelter facility, so we depend on our fellow neighbors to provide a safe haven while these animals recuperate and search for their forever homes. We raise funds to provide education, supplies, training and veterinary care (including spay/neuter) to the animals we accept into our program. We are proud to partner with Metro Animal Care and Control (MACC) as a "Certified Shelter Partner," to evaluate opportunities to accept animals from their facility (that were picked up or surrendered from our service area), provided we have the resources to do so. We are proud to partner with Pet Community Center (PCC) for the majority of vaccinations and spay/neuter procedures.

Impact

East Nashville Community Action Network (East C.A.N.) operates a community information resource gateway through our email address, info@eastcan.org. We respond to over 200 emails a month (over 2,500 emails a year), providing information about our program services and a wide range of information and community resources regarding animal welfare, veterinary care and training assistance with the ultimate intention of keeping animals from being displaced. All messages receive a link to 18 different resources including: spay/neuter services, lost/found animals, adoptable animals, emergency veterinary services, in-home end-of-life services, and pet-friendly rental homes. Many of our email inquiries result in multiple communications via email, text, telephone and occasional in-person visits over a series of days or weeks, depending on the individual need.
