Mission
The purpose of TNP is to teach Tennesseans about our natural world, inspire the desire to learn more, instill an appreciation of responsible environmental stewardship, and channel volunteer efforts toward education of the general public and conservation of Tennessee's natural resources.
Background
After unsuccessfully trying for a grant to begin a state wide program, the founding group of citizens approached Owl's Hill Nature Sanctuary to start its first chapter and began to cross the state one chapter at a time. TNP now consists of eleven chapters. It is currently run by an all volunteer board with one part time paid Chapter Coordinator.
Impact
In the past year we have continued to add chapters, to refine the course and completed the creation of a data base that allows us to keep track of student requirements and volunteer hours. This current year we are revamping our website so that it will be a central resource for naturalist events and information. Tennessee Naturalist Program hopes to continue adding chapters throughout the state, increase the number of continuing education classes and workshops, and provide scholarship opportunities for teachers.
Needs
- Equipment Grants for Tennessee Naturalist Program Chapters
- Funding for Teacher Scholarships to further the mission of the Tennessee Naturalist Program
Board Chair Statement
I have been with this organization from the beginning. It is obvious many people are interested in learning about the world around them. It is fun to watch adults learn, share and enjoy the outside and being with like minded people. Starting as an all volunteer organization, it has put a great burden on the board to get all the work required to become a 501(c) 3 done, but at the same time very rewarding as more people learn to love something so important.
