Mission

The mission of the BHHA is to preserve historic sites within the community and to inform citizens about the area's history in order to form a deeper connection with the community.

Background

The Bellevue Harpeth Historic Association was formed in 2001 as an outgrowth of the Bellevue Greenbelt Association. The orginal Belle Vue I cabin was donated to the organization by Dolly Carter and her children. Funds were raised to dismantled and store the cabin and additional funds were raised to reassemble and restore the Belle Vue I cabin at Red Caboose Park in Bellevue.

Impact

The BHHA is a 501 c 3 non-profit organization that maintains the Belle Vue I cabin at Red Caboose Park. It also maintains the two DeMoss cemeteries. Abraham Louis DeMoss built the cabin in the late 1790s on a hill off Morton Mill Road overlooking the Harpeth River. He gave the name Belle Vue to the community and he and his family are buried in the two cemeteries, one on Todd Pries in River Plantation and the other on Old Harding Road next to Belle Vue II.
The cabin recently got a new roof. We are in need of substantial chinking at the cabin.
The rock walls surrounding the cemeteries are in need of repair as are several of the headstones.
All maintenance and repairs to the cabin and the cemeteries are the responsibility of the BHHA. No government funding is provided
In addition we had an event for the community on October 12, 2019 that showed some examples of how settlers lived in the late 1790's early 1800's. We had a large attendance - more than we expected- and plan a similar event in the fall of 2023.
We have a speaker on topics on interest to those who love history 6 times a year free and open to the community. We also offer field trips several times each year - also open to the public.

Needs

1. Chinking for the cabin is our highest need ($14,000)
2. Costumes for docents ($800)
3. Ongoing fundraising for maintenance purposes for. the cabin as well as the two cemeteries
4. Additional volunteers
5.. Educational materials (approximately $1000)

CEO Statement

The DeMoss cabin is a unique example of the way early settlers to this area lived. We are so pleased to have three direct descendants of Abraham Louis DeMoss on our board of directors.

Board Chair Statement

The board of the Bellevue Harpeth Historic Association is passionate about keeping the Belle Vue I cabin open to the public. It is a challenge to keep it going with the small group of us who are involved. We continue to seek new members.
