Mission
Art Helps Cancer, Inc. partners with the community to assist families by alleviating day to day concerns so they can focus on fighting cancer.
Background
Art Helps Cancer (www.arthelpscancer.org) is a local non-profit organization founded by cancer survivors and Nolensville residents Anna and Elmer Hill. As they were struggling through their individual treatments they found it was the little day-to-day needs that were often overwhelming. It might be that the house needed cleaning or the lawn needing cutting. Perhaps after a day of hospital trips and chemo-therapy there just wasn't the energy to prepare a meal. And then there is the hardship of isolation because you can't risk going out or visit friends for fear of an infection that could be devastating to your body system.
Once well and cancer free they wanted to give back to and assist others experiencing the challenges of cancer. Their plan was simple, to begin a non-profit based in Nolensville that would be of assistance to individuals dealing with cancer and their families. To support their endeavor they drew on Anna's experiences as a local artist. Each year local and national artists donate art works in multiple mediums that are auctioned off at an annual fund-raiser. Art Helps Cancer also began a sponsorship program that local businesses could purchase. Thus Art Helps Cancer became a reality that continues to grow and is always free to the people and families we help..
Impact
Art Helps Cancer impacts families dealing with cancer by offering support at no cost to individuals and families dealing with cancer by:
1. providing a care bag to each individual full of goodies that includes a comforter-blanket to wrap up in while sitting in the cold chemo-therapy room, snacks, activity and reading books to help pass the time, lemon drops to mask the bad metallic taste the therapies cause, and for children a stuffed animal and small games.
2. each person in treatment is sent a weekly card with hand-written words of support in the mail.
3. gift cards are provided to local restaurants and grocery stores to help with food prep.
4. when needed a professional house cleaner and/or lawn service may be provided.
5. Art Helps Cancer reaches out to each family to see what we can do to make their life a little easier as they go through this difficult time.
Needs
Art Helps Cancer needs:
1. local corporate sponsors to support our outreach through printed brochures and business cards (estimated at $750 annually).
2. donations to support our gift card program to provide meals and food for those going through cancer treatments (estimated annual cost $2,500)
3. individual or company to provide housekeeping services when called upon. Must be insured.
4. individual or company to provide lawn care services when called upon. Must be insured.
5. volunteers to assist with the planning, setup, and operation of the Annual Art Helps Cancer Art Auction.
