Background

Since our founding in 1842, Cumberland University has been committed to preparing students for a lifetime of learning, leadership, and growth. Throughout our long history, we've continued to evolve and rise. Our objective is to provide students with state-of-the-art resources to pursue their academic aspirations and build meaningful lives. We offer 80+ majors, minors and graduate programs through the Millard and J.J. Oakley School of Humanities, Education and the Arts, Labry School of Science, Technology and Business, and Rudy School of Nursing and Health Professions. 93% of our students receive some kind of scholarship.

There are few universities in the Southeast with a richer heritage than Cumberland University. Cumberland University boasts as alumni more than 80 members of congress, including Albert Gore, Sr., two justices of the U.S. Supreme Court, and United States Secretary of State Cordell Hull, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1945. Other notable alumni include James Lafayette Bomar, president of Rotary International, Thomas P. Gore, United State Senator from Oklahoma, and Myles Horton, founder of the Highlander School, where men and women such as Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks learned of the peaceful routes to social justice.

Cumberland offers a variety of educational, athletic, and social experiences to enhance the learning opportunities of the current student body. The university has exceptional undergraduate programs in the sciences and social sciences, fine arts and music, business administration and economics, education and nursing. Graduate degrees are offered in business administration, education, public service management, fine arts, and sport and exercise.

Impact

We are so very proud of our students and the growth Cumberland is experiencing. In May 2023, 741 students graduated from our graduate and undergraduate programs, the largest graduating class from Cumberland University. We ended the 2022-2023 fiscal year with a balanced budget and an increase of income over last year. And, once again, Cumberland started the fall 2023 semester with 3072 students which was the largest enrollment in CU's history.
